Overview
Speed is the whole reason for the Haas VF-3SS. On the same 40 × 20 × 25 in (1,016 × 508 × 635 mm) travels as the VF-3 it runs a 12,000 rpm spindle, 1,400 ipm (35.6 m/min) rapids and a side-mount tool changer that swaps tools in 1.8 s, where the VF-3 tops out at 8,100 rpm and 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min).
Those figures pay off on parts made of many short moves. Chip-to-chip time is 2.4 s and the cutting feedrate reaches 833 ipm (21.2 m/min), so light finishing passes in aluminium and tool changes between small features take less of the cycle. The 30+1 magazine also carries enough tools to keep a family of parts set up without reloading.
The spindle itself is not a bigger motor. It carries the same 30 hp (22.4 kW) and 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm as the VF-3, in an inline direct-drive layout with liquid cooling, and Haas's table for this model shows no gearbox row. The higher speed is for small cutters and high surface speeds, not for heavier roughing. Thrust is 3,085 lbf (13,723 N) on X and Y and 3,923 lbf (17,450 N) on Z.
Two limits come with the speed. Table load drops to 1,750 lb (794 kg), half the 3,500 lb (1,588 kg) the VF-3 carries on the same 48 × 18 in (1,219 × 457 mm) table. And with every pocket of the magazine full, a tool can be no larger than 2.5 in (64 mm) in diameter; cutters up to 5 in (127 mm) need the neighbouring pockets left empty. Tool length is limited to 13 in (330 mm) and weight to 12 lb (5.4 kg). Haas's starting price is US$101,995.
