Our best estimate for a vertical machining centers (vmc) in this class — not a quote from FANUC. Configuration moves it a long way.
Overview
The FANUC Robodrill D54C is a vertical machining center with 500 mm of X travel and 400 mm of Y, run by FANUC's Series 31i-B Plus control. Z travel is selectable, 400 mm or 330 mm, and that is the first of three decisions the specification leaves to the buyer. The other two are the turret and the spindle.
FANUC lists two turret drives. The servo driven turret holds 14, 21 or 28 tools; the spindle driven turret holds 14 or 21. A process that needs 28 tools in the machine therefore settles the turret type before anything else is chosen. The spindle is picked by speed class: the Basic and High-torque spindles reach 10000 min-1, the High-acceleration and Tapping spindles 12000 min-1, and the High-speed spindle 24000 min-1.
Two other Robodrill listings show the same choices as separate models. The Robodrill α-D14MiB Plus has the same 500 mm and 400 mm in X and Y with 330 mm of Z, and the Robodrill α-D14MiBADV Plus has 400 mm of Z; both carry 14 tools and the FANUC Series 31i-B Plus control. On the D54C the two Z strokes and the three magazine sizes sit under one model name.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Z travel is selectable at 400 mm or 330 mm on the same 500 mm by 400 mm X and Y
- Servo driven turret is listed with 14, 21 or 28 tools, so the magazine can be sized to the part family
- Spindle range runs from 10000 min-1 Basic and High-torque versions to a 24000 min-1 High-speed version
Limitations
- The spindle driven turret stops at 21 tools; 28 tools are listed only with the servo driven turret
- Y travel is 400 mm with no longer option listed, so the part or fixture has to fit that depth
- 24000 min-1 is available only on the High-speed spindle and the High-torque spindle is listed at 10000 min-1, so speed and torque are a choice, not a combination
- FANUC's figures for this model give no spindle power, torque or table load; confirm those for the chosen spindle before quoting heavy cuts

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Z travel is selectable: 400 mm or 330 mm. X is 500 mm and Y is 400 mm in either case. The longer stroke gives more room for tall fixtures and long tools, so decide it from the tallest setup you expect to run and not from the part alone.
02
It depends on the turret. The servo driven turret is listed with 14, 21 or 28 tools. The spindle driven turret is listed with 14 or 21. If a job needs 28 tools loaded at once, only the servo driven turret covers it.
03
Three speed classes across five spindle types. Basic and High-torque spindles run to 10000 min-1, High-acceleration and Tapping spindles to 12000 min-1, and the High-speed spindle to 24000 min-1. The listed control is the Series 31i-B Plus.
