How much does the Tormach 1100MX cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Tormach 1100MX that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Tormach 1100MX is the servo-driven, BT30 mill on Tormach's larger cast iron frame. It has 18 in (457 mm) of X travel, 11 in (279 mm) of Y and 16.25 in (413 mm) of Z over a 34 in × 9.5 in (863 mm × 241 mm) table, and a belt-driven 2 hp (1.49 kW) spindle that runs to 10,000 rpm.
Against the 1100M, built on the same frame, three things change. The axes are driven by servo motors with a positional feedback loop, so the controller gets confirmation of each commanded move or an error if something like a collision occurs. Feed rates rise to 300 ipm (7.62 m/min) in X and Y and 230 ipm (5.84 m/min) in Z, where the 1100M is limited to 110 ipm (2.79 m/min) and 90 ipm (2.29 m/min). And the spindle taper is BT30 instead of R8, with an encoder that allows rigid tapping.
Spindle power is modest. Two horsepower through a Poly-V belt is enough for small and medium cutters, and the 10,000 rpm top speed helps in aluminium, but Tormach's list of materials, which runs to titanium and hardened steel, should be planned around light cuts. The 1500MX is the mill in the range with more spindle: 4 hp (3 kW) continuous.
Construction is traditional: a cast iron frame and table with hand-scraped hydrodynamic ways, tapered adjustment gibs and a PTFE-filled sliding surface. The table takes up to 500 lb (227 kg). A typical system occupies 69 in × 56.5 in (1,753 mm × 1,435 mm), stands 96 in (2,438 mm) high and weighs 1,850 lb (840 kg) with the tool changer fitted. Power is single-phase 230 Vac on a 20A breaker through a NEMA 6-20P plug. The machine-only configuration includes the stand, enclosure, PathPilot operator console and a manual oil pump; the 12-pocket automatic tool changer, probe, coolant and fixture plate belong to the higher packages.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Servo motors on all three axes with positional feedback, feeding at 300 ipm (7.62 m/min) in X and Y and 230 ipm (5.84 m/min) in Z
- BT30 spindle taper with a spindle encoder: rigid tapping, tension/compression tapping and thread milling are all listed
- 10,000 rpm maximum spindle speed, against 7,500 rpm on the 1100M
- 16.25 in (413 mm) of Z travel and 17.25 in (438 mm) of maximum clearance from spindle nose to table
- Table rated for 500 lb (227 kg) on a cast iron frame with hand-scraped ways
- Single-phase 230 Vac supply on a 20A breaker
Limitations
- Spindle power is 2 hp (1.49 kW), half the 4 hp (3 kW) continuous rating of the 1500MX
- Y travel is 11 in (279 mm) on a table 9.5 in (241 mm) wide, which limits deep parts and two-row fixtures
- X and Y feed is a quarter of the 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) that the 1500MX reaches
- The 12-pocket automatic tool changer is not part of the machine-only configuration

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Tormach lists three primary differences between its M and MX mills: servos instead of steppers on the axes, a BT30 spindle instead of the R8 spindle with TTS holders, and rigid tapping with an encoded spindle instead of thread milling or a tapping head. In figures, the 1100MX feeds at 300 ipm (7.62 m/min) in X and Y and turns 10,000 rpm; the 1100M feeds at 110 ipm (2.79 m/min) and turns 7,500 rpm. X and Y travels are the same on both.
02
Travels are 18 in (457 mm) in X, 11 in (279 mm) in Y and 16.25 in (413 mm) in Z. The table is 34 in × 9.5 in (863 mm × 241 mm) with three slots, and the maximum clearance from spindle nose to table is 17.25 in (438 mm). The spindle centerline sits 11 in (279 mm) from the machine column.
03
Single-phase 230 Vac, 50/60 Hz, on a 20A breaker. The machine is supplied with a NEMA 6-20P plug and requires a NEMA 6-20R receptacle. Tormach's note to the power row says performance is best at 240 vac. No three-phase supply or phase converter is involved.
04
Only in the top package. Tormach's package comparison lists the machine-only configuration as the mill, stand and enclosure with the PathPilot operator console and a manual oil pump. The 12-pocket automatic tool changer is part of the Premium package, together with the flood coolant kit, fixture tooling plate, spindle probe and toolsetter. The typical system weight of 1,850 lb (840 kg) is quoted with the tool changer included.
05
Tormach's own PathPilot, which the company calls its exclusive CNC controller. The listed features are a touch screen friendly interface, conversational programming, a built-in speeds and feeds calculator, support for up to four axis continuous machining and free updates for life. The operator console adds hardware knobs for feed and speed overrides and a hand-held jog pendant.
