Overview
The Hurco VMX64i-50T upgrades the already large VMX64i with a CAT 50 Big Plus spindle for shops that need to move serious metal across 64 inches of travel. When you're face milling steel plates or boring large holes in cast iron over a 5-foot work envelope, the 50-taper spindle's torque advantage is decisive.
Travels remain 1,626 x 508 x 508 mm (64 x 20 x 20 in), identical to the 40-taper version. The spindle upgrades to a 10,000 RPM Big Plus CAT 50 producing 18.5 kW (25 hp) and 358 Nm (264 ft-lbs) of torque. That's 70% more torque than the 40-taper VMX64i, letting you run a 4-inch face mill at production feeds in steel without the spindle struggling.
Table dimensions are 1,829 x 508 mm (72 x 20 in) with a 2,200 kg (4,850 lb) max load — 200 kg more than the 40-taper version. The additional load capacity reflects the heavier fixtures and workpieces typical in 50-taper applications. The 40-tool arm-type ATC handles the physically larger CAT 50 toolholders without issues.
Construction is the same proven hybrid design — roller guides on X and Y, box way on Z. Rapids are 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on X and Y, 25 m/min (984 ipm) on Z, slightly slower than the 40-taper version due to the heavier spindle head. At approximately 9,500 kg (20,944 lb), the 50T is about 700 kg heavier than the standard VMX64i.
The one-piece base casting spanning 64 inches is a significant engineering achievement. Thermal stability across this length requires careful warm-up procedures and stable shop temperature. WinMax control is standard, providing both conversational and G-code programming.
Pricing runs $155,000-$195,000 new. Used machines from 2015-2020 trade in the $85,000-$135,000 range. At this price and capability level, it competes with large-format VMCs from Mazak, Okuma, and Haas.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 358 Nm (264 ft-lbs) CAT 50 spindle torque enables aggressive roughing in steel across 64 inches of travel
- 1,626 mm (64 in) X-travel handles very long parts in a single setup
- 2,200 kg table load supports heavy steel workpieces and large fixtures
- Big Plus CAT 50 dual-contact taper maximizes rigidity for heavy cutting
- 40-tool ATC provides ample capacity for complex multi-operation jobs
- One-piece base casting ensures accuracy across the full 64-inch envelope
Limitations
- 10,000 RPM limit reduces efficiency with small-diameter tools in aluminum
- CAT 50 tooling costs 30-50% more than CAT 40 across the board
- 9,500 kg weight demands a heavy-duty foundation and complicates installation
- 508 mm (20 in) Y and Z feel narrow for a machine at this price point
- $155-195K puts it in competition with established large-format VMCs from Mazak and Okuma

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New base price starts around $155,000. Fully configured with through-spindle coolant, probing, and options, expect $175,000-$195,000. Used machines from 2015-2020 sell for $85,000-$135,000 depending on condition and hours.
02
The 50T swaps the 12K RPM CAT 40 spindle for a 10K RPM CAT 50 with 70% more torque (264 vs 157 ft-lbs) and 7 more horsepower (25 vs 18 hp). It's 700 kg heavier and $15-20K more expensive. Choose the 50T for steel, the standard for aluminum.
03
For the materials the 50T is designed to cut — steel, cast iron, stainless, titanium — 10K RPM is more than adequate. You'll rarely exceed 5,000 RPM with large-diameter 50-taper tooling. For aluminum with small endmills, the 40-taper VMX64i's 12K RPM is the better choice.
04
Long steel mold bases, die plates, press brake tooling, aerospace structural members, large cast iron housings, and marine components. If you're face milling a 4-foot steel plate with a 4-inch shell mill, you need the torque and rigidity of CAT 50.
05
No. The spindle, column, bearings, and ATC are different between the 40T and 50T versions. This is a purchase-time decision. If there's any chance you'll need 50-taper capability, buy the 50T upfront — it's far cheaper than buying a second machine later.
