Overview

Three metres of X is where the AWEA VP-3012 sits: 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of X travel, 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Y, 760 mm (29.9 in) of Z, and a table 3,000 x 1,100 mm (118.1 x 43.3 in) that carries 4,500 kg (9,921 lb). It is also the first size in the series where the length starts to cost something on the X axis.

Two figures show it. X rapid traverse is 20 m/min (787 ipm), while Y stays at 24 m/min (945 ipm). X positioning accuracy is listed at 0.016 mm and X repeatability at 0.012 mm, against 0.012 mm and 0.010 mm for the Y and Z axes. Cutting feed is unaffected at 12 m/min (472 ipm). For most plate and frame work these are small concessions, but a shop holding tight pitch tolerances over the whole stroke should plan around the X figure.

The machine weighs 20,000 kg (44,092 lb). That happens to be the weight of the VP-2016 as well, which makes the two a real choice: the same mass spent on length here, or on 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of Y there.

The head is the series' gear spindle, 6,000 rpm on BT50 with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor. AWEA places the spindle, its motor, the ball screw and the hydraulic counterbalance cylinders symmetrically in the head, a layout the maker says limits thermal distortion and deflection.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,000 x 1,100 mm (118.1 x 43.3 in) table rated for 4,500 kg (9,921 lb)
  • Cutting feed rate remains 12 m/min (472 ipm); the VP-4012 drops to 10 m/min (394 ipm)
  • X rapid of 20 m/min (787 ipm), twice the 10 m/min (394 ipm) of the VP-4012
  • Symmetrical head layout with hydraulic counterbalance cylinders, as described by the maker
  • Y and Z axes hold 0.012 mm positioning accuracy

Limitations

  • X positioning accuracy widens to 0.016 mm and X repeatability to 0.012 mm
  • The 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor is modest for a 20,000 kg (44,092 lb) machine; the HD-3012 has 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp)
  • Table load is below that of the HD-3012, which is rated for 5,500 kg (12,125 lb)
  • 1,300 mm (51.2 in) between columns limits part width; the VP-3016 opens that to 1,800 mm (70.9 in)

Best For

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How accurate is the VP-3012 along its X axis?

The table gives X positioning accuracy of 0.016 mm and X repeatability of 0.012 mm. Y and Z are listed at 0.012 mm and 0.010 mm. AWEA describes a semi-closed loop system in which the encoder is connected directly to the ball screw end.

02 Is the VP-3012 or the VP-2016 the better fit?

Both weigh 20,000 kg (44,092 lb), so the question is the shape of the work. The VP-3012 has 3,000 mm (118.1 in) of X on a 1,100 mm wide table and carries 4,500 kg (9,921 lb). The VP-2016 has 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of X with 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of Y, a 1,500 mm wide table, 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) of load and a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor.

03 What does the HD-3012 offer over the VP-3012?

The HD-3012 covers the same 3,000 mm (118.1 in) by 1,200 mm (47.2 in) area with a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) gear spindle, a table load of 5,500 kg (12,125 lb) and a weight of 22,500 kg (49,603 lb). The Z rapid of the HD-3012 is 15 m/min (591 ipm), slower than the 20 m/min (787 ipm) here.

04 How is the VP-3012 built?

According to AWEA, the bridge and base are a one-piece casting with hand scraped contact surfaces, and the joint between columns and bed is hand scraped too. X and Y use linear guide ways, with the Y-axis ways offset from each other to shorten the distance between spindle and cross beam. Z runs on a hardened, ground box way.
