Overview

The Johnford VMC-1600SHD puts the series' heavy 50-taper head on the wide S frame, and unlike the narrower HD machines it keeps the full Z travel. Travels are 1,600 x 1,100 x 800 mm (63 x 43.3 x 31.5 in). The VMC-1600HD, by comparison, has 850 mm (33.5 in) of Y and 710 mm (28 in) of Z.

That makes this the first model in the Large VMC line where a buyer gets the big spindle without giving up envelope. Spindle nose to table is 150~950 mm (5.9~37.4 in), so a 400 mm (15.7 in) boring bar still clears a workpiece of useful height. The table is 1,800 x 1,000 mm (70.9 x 39.4 in) and holds 4,600 kg (10,120 lb).

The spindle specification reads BT-50 / CAT-50, 100 mm (3.9 in) spindle diameter, 10-4,500 rpm with an automatic Hi-Lo gearbox and 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp). It hangs 1,150 mm (45.3 in) out from the column. Users planning heavy face milling near the front of the table should weigh that overhang; cuts taken closer to the column put less bending load on the head. The Y axis runs on a Φ63 ball screw.

At 18,600 kg (40,920 lb) the SHD weighs the same as the 40-taper VMC-1600S and takes the same 4,500 x 4,580 x 3,695 mm (177.2 x 180.3 x 145.5 in) of space. A 20-tool armless changer is standard. An oil cooler for the spindle and gearbox and rigid tapping are included; linear scales and a thermal compensation system for the spindle are options.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 50-taper spindle with the full 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel, which the narrower HD models do not have
  • 1,100 mm (43.3 in) Y travel and a 1,800 x 1,000 mm (70.9 x 39.4 in) table
  • 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) through an automatic Hi-Lo gearbox
  • 4,600 kg (10,120 lb) table load
  • Up to 950 mm (37.4 in) between spindle nose and table

Limitations

  • 1,150 mm (45.3 in) from spindle center to column is a long reach for a heavy cutting head
  • Top speed of 4,500 rpm rules out small-tool finishing
  • Standard tool storage is 20 pockets
  • Thermal compensation and linear scales are extra-cost options
