Overview
The Brother Speedio S500Xd1 is the mid-range model in the XD1-generation Speedio VMC lineup, offering 500 x 400 mm X/Y travel combined with the enhanced XD1 dynamic package and a 28-tool arm ATC. It is the direct predecessor to the S500Xd2.
X/Y/Z travels are 500 x 400 x 305 mm. The spindle runs at 16,000 rpm with 7.5 kW on BT30 taper. The 28-tool arm-type ATC expands on the 21-tool turret variants to accommodate more complex tooling setups. Rapids are 50 m/min on X/Y and 56 m/min on Z.
The XD1 generation improved servo response and acceleration timing compared to the base X1 series. Table load capacity is 200 kg. Positioning accuracy is +/- 0.004 mm with repeatability of +/- 0.002 mm.
Machine weight is approximately 3,200 kg. Footprint is 1,650 x 2,340 mm — compact enough for multi-machine robotic cell arrangements.
The S500Xd1 represents a strong balance between travel, tool capacity, and footprint in the Speedio family. Used units are widely traded as shops upgrade to XD2 generation machines.
New machines (when available) price $95,000-$140,000. Used units from 2016-2021 trade $50,000-$90,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 28-tool arm ATC handles complex multi-tool parts
- 500 mm X-travel is the most popular Speedio size for general production
- XD1 servo dynamics improve acceleration over the base X1 series
- Same high-speed BT30 spindle architecture as other Speedios
- Compact footprint suits multi-machine or robotic cell layouts
- Large used market makes sourcing and parts straightforward
Limitations
- BT30 taper limits axial force in heavy steel operations
- XD1 generation superseded by XD2 — new units may not be available
- 28-tool arm ATC slightly slower chip-to-chip than 21-tool turret variants
- Z-axis 305 mm limits tall fixture or part height
- 200 kg table load may require lighter fixturing strategies

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New $95,000-$140,000. Used $50,000-$90,000.
02
The 28-tool arm ATC provides more tool capacity; the 21-tool turret on S-series turret variants offers a faster 0.9s chip-to-chip time.
03
The Xd2 refined servo dynamics further and updated the control software. The Xd1 remains a capable production machine at lower used prices.
04
Standard 16,000 rpm. High-speed spindle upgrades (up to 30,000 rpm) may be available as factory options on some build configurations.
05
Yes, widely used in robotic cells. Front-access design is standard for Speedio automation.
