Overview

The Brother Speedio S500Xd1 is a 30-taper vertical machining center with 500 × 400 × 300 mm (19.7 × 15.7 × 11.8 in) of travel, a 600 x 400 mm (23.6 x 15.7 in) table, a 10,000 rpm BT30 spindle as standard and a magazine of 14, 21 or 28 tools, controlled by Brother's CNC-D00.

Two options define how far this machine can be pushed. The first is table load: 250 kg (551 lb) as standard, or 400 kg (881 lb) with the option. That higher figure opens the machine to a steel fixture plate loaded with several parts, or a vise plus a compact rotary unit, which would be marginal at the standard rating. The second is the 28-tool magazine. A shop running a family of parts can leave every tool for the family in the machine and switch jobs by program rather than by reloading the changer.

Tool changes stay fast with the bigger magazine. Tool to tool is 0.6 sec with 14 or 21 tools and 0.7 sec with 28; chip to chip is 1.2 and 1.3 sec. Tools up to 250 mm (9.8 in) long and ø110 mm (4.3 in) in diameter fit, at 3.0 kg (6.6 lb) each.
