Overview

No Sharp CNC knee mill has a longer X stroke than the LMV-50 pair, and the LMV-50-MP-2 is the two-axis one. Its 9 x 50 in (230 x 1270 mm) table travels 32 in (812 mm), slightly more than the 31 in (787 mm) of the TMV-MP-2, on a frame that weighs 2,500 lb (1,133 kg).

The gain in length is small. The real distinction from the TMV line is everything else about the frame: Y travel is 11 in (279 mm), the ram moves 12 in (304.8 mm), and the spindle center sits 6.75 - 18.5 in (171 - 470 mm) from the column. This is a light mill with a long table, good for reaching along a part and less good for reaching across one.

Sharp describes the spindle drive simply as "vari speed": 60 - 4500 rpm from a 3 hp (2.25 kW) motor into an R-8 taper. The head swivels 360° and tilts 45° in both planes.

Two axes are driven by the MILLPWR G2 through ball screws. The quill, with 5 in (127 mm) of travel and three feeds, stays manual and is read on the third channel of the digital readout. Electrical demand is low, 3 kVA at 8 amp or 4 amp. Floor area is 7 x 6.5 x 6.7 ft (2.1 x 2 x 2 m).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 32 in (812 mm) of X travel, the longest of Sharp's CNC knee mills
  • 9 x 50 in (230 x 1270 mm) table on a 2,500 lb (1,133 kg) machine
  • 360° head swivel and 45° tilt in both planes
  • 3 kVA supply at 8 amp or 4 amp
  • Two-axis MILLPWR G2 with safety handwheels

Limitations

  • Cross travel of 11 in (279 mm)
  • Ram travel of 12 in (304.8 mm), less than the 18.5 in (470 mm) of the TMV-MP-2
  • Quill is not a CNC axis, so depth is set by hand
  • Knee travel and quill diameter rows are inconsistent on Sharp's page
