Overview
The Makino V99 (40 Taper) is a large vertical machining center with 1,000 x 800 x 500 mm (39.4 x 31.5 x 19.7 in) of travel, a 1,100 x 800 mm (43.3 x 31.5 in) table rated for 2,000 kg (4,409 lb), and a 22 kW (30 hp) CAT40 spindle with HSK-A63 as an option. It is the 40-taper version of the V99; a 50-taper version was offered on the same frame. Makino does not list it in its current lineup and it is likely an older model, so read the figures here as listed rather than confirmed.
The point of a 40-taper spindle on a frame this size is speed with mid-size tools. The main speed row gives 14,000 RPM, but another row gives 20,000, so the spindle actually fitted has to be checked. The rapid rows also disagree: 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) in X and Y and 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) in Z in one place, 787 in/min in another. The axis-specific rows are the more detailed and probably the ones to believe.
Tools can be up to 4.7 in in diameter and 17.6 lbs. The magazine holds 30 tools as standard, with 40 and 80 listed as options, and tool-to-tool time is 8 secs. Through-spindle coolant is standard, which matters for deep drilling in mold plates. The axes ride on roller-type linear guides, the machine weighs about 12,000 kg (26,455 lb), and the control is the Makino Professional 6 (Pro 6).
Among current Makino verticals, the PS105 also runs a 14,000 rpm CAT40 spindle but has 1,050 x 510 x 460 mm of travel on a 1,300 x 510 mm table. The V99 (40 Taper) has far more Y: 800 mm (31.5 in) against 510 mm.
