Overview

The Milltronics VM4020 is a 40 x 20 x 20 in (1,016 x 508 x 508 mm) vertical machining center with a 46 x 20 in (1,168 x 508 mm) table, a 10,000 rpm BIG-PLUS ISO No. 40 spindle and the Milltronics 9000-DGI CNC. It is the middle length of three machines built on one spindle and tool changer: the VM3018 with a 34 x 18 in (864 x 457 mm) table and the VM5020 with a 52 x 20 in (1,321 x 508 mm) table are both listed at the same 20/15 hp (14.9/11.2 kW), 75 lb-ft (102 Nm) and 24 tools.

What the extra length buys is fixture room, not capacity. Table load is 3,770 lb (1,710 kg), identical to the VM3018 and the VM5020, and the machine weighs 9,100 lb (4,128 kg), only slightly more than the 9,000 lb (4,082 kg) VM3018. A 46 in (1,168 mm) table takes a row of vises or one long part, with the full 20 in (508 mm) of Y travel across its depth.

The VM4224IL is the step up: a 50 x 24 in (1,270 x 610 mm) table, 12,000 rpm, 89 lb-ft (121 Nm), 30 tools and the 9000-INSPIRE control, at 14,775 lb (6,702 kg), about 62% more than the VM4020.

Spindle nose to table distance is 4-24 in (102-610 mm). Tools are CT40 with MAS 60 retention knobs, up to 3.15 in (80 mm) in diameter, 9.45 in (240 mm) long and 15.4 lb (7.0 kg). The length limit is the one to check against deep-pocket or long-reach tooling. Rapids are 945 ipm (24.0 m/min) and T-slots are 0.71 in (18 mm).

Height is 101.5 in (2,578 mm), the nominal operating footprint is 97.7 x 111.7 in (2,482 x 2,837 mm), and the electrical requirement is 25 kVA / 29 A at 480 V, 3-phase.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 40 in (1,016 mm) of X travel on a 46 x 20 in (1,168 x 508 mm) table
  • Table load of 3,770 lb (1,710 kg), slightly above the 3,660 lb (1,660 kg) of the larger VM4224IL
  • 10,000 rpm BIG-PLUS ISO No. 40 spindle with 20/15 hp (14.9/11.2 kW) and 75 lb-ft (102 Nm)
  • At 9,100 lb (4,128 kg) it is much lighter to install than the 14,775 lb (6,702 kg) VM4224IL
  • Milltronics 9000-DGI CNC is named in the table for this model

Limitations

  • Y and Z travel are both 20 in (508 mm); the VM4224IL has a 50 x 24 in (1,270 x 610 mm) table for deeper parts
  • Tools are limited to 9.45 in (240 mm) in length and 3.15 in (80 mm) in diameter
  • Spindle figures are the same as the shorter VM3018, so the longer table brings no extra power or torque
  • 24 tools, against 30 on the VM4224IL

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the VM4020?

40 in (1,016 mm) in X, 20 in (508 mm) in Y and 20 in (508 mm) in Z. The table is 46 x 20 in (1,168 x 508 mm) with 0.71 in (18 mm) T-slots, and spindle nose to table distance is 4-24 in (102-610 mm).

02 How does the VM4020 differ from the VM4224IL?

The VM4224IL is a larger and heavier machine with a 50 x 24 in (1,270 x 610 mm) table, 12,000 rpm, 89 lb-ft (121 Nm), 30 tools, a 3,660 lb (1,660 kg) table load, a weight of 14,775 lb (6,702 kg) and the 9000-INSPIRE control. The VM4020 has a 46 x 20 in (1,168 x 508 mm) table, 10,000 rpm, 75 lb-ft (102 Nm), 24 tools, a 3,770 lb (1,710 kg) table load and the 9000-DGI CNC, and weighs 9,100 lb (4,128 kg).

03 Does the VM4020 have a stronger spindle than the VM3018?

No. The VM3018 and the VM4020 are both listed at 10,000 rpm, 20/15 hp (14.9/11.2 kW) and 75 lb-ft (102 Nm) with a 24-tool double-arm changer. The difference is the table: 46 x 20 in (1,168 x 508 mm) here, 34 x 18 in (864 x 457 mm) on the VM3018.

04 Which control is on the VM4020?

Milltronics lists the 9000-DGI CNC for the VM4020. The table gives no further control detail, such as screen size or memory, so ask for the control specification sheet with the quotation.

05 How much space and power does the VM4020 need?

A nominal operating footprint of 97.7 x 111.7 in (2,482 x 2,837 mm), a height of 101.5 in (2,578 mm), a weight of 9,100 lb (4,128 kg) and a supply of 25 kVA / 29 A at 480 V, 3-phase.
