Overview

The Fryer MC-40L is a 40 x 22 x 22 in (1,016 x 559 x 559 mm) linear way vertical machining center, the size most job shops treat as their general-purpose machine. In the MC-L series it is the largest model that keeps the 1,450 ipm (36.8 m/min) rapids; the MC-45L above it is listed at 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min).

Its table is 22 x 43 in (559 x 1,092 mm) and is rated 3,000 lb (1,361 kg). Two vises with room between them, or a vise and a 4th axis, fit comfortably, and the 40 in (1,016 mm) door opening exposes the whole X stroke. Between the MC-30L and this model the frame is closely related: the same 100 in (2,540 mm) operating width and 109 in (2,769 mm) height, with a deeper base at 97 in (2,464 mm) and a weight of 9,500 lb (4,309 kg).

A 20 hp (14.9 kW) peak inline motor drives the Big Plus CAT 40 spindle from 60 to 10,000 rpm, with 100 ft-lb (136 Nm) at 350 rpm. Big Plus dual contact matters at this speed because the holder seats on the face as well as the taper. The 30 station arm type changer needs 1.5 seconds per change.

Fryer shows this model on its site in a version with handwheels, in keeping with the manual, semi-automatic and full CNC modes of its control. For a production machine that is unusual, and it is aimed at shops where the same spindle does one-off jobs in the morning and a batch in the afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the main specifications of the Fryer MC-40L?

Travels are 40 x 22 x 22 in (1,016 x 559 x 559 mm), the table is 22 x 43 in (559 x 1,092 mm) for 3,000 lb (1,361 kg), and the spindle is Big Plus CAT 40 at 60 - 10,000 rpm with 20 hp (14.9 kW) peak. Rapids are 1,450 ipm (36.8 m/min) and the changer holds 30 tools.

02 Is the MC-40L a linear guide machine?

Yes. Fryer describes the MC-L series as linear way high speed machining centers with roller type linear ways and FEA designed castings. Ballscrews are 1.57 in (40 mm) and peak axis thrust is 4,000 lb on X, Y and Z.

03 How does the MC-40L compare with the box way MC-40B?

The MC-40B has 40 x 20 x 28 in (1,016 x 508 x 711 mm) of travel, an 8,500 rpm spindle with 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak, 24 tools and a weight of 12,100 lb (5,489 kg). The MC-40L is lighter at 9,500 lb (4,309 kg), faster in rapids and spindle speed, and has less Z travel.

04 What does the MC-40L need for power and air?

40 A at 380-500 VAC, 3 phase, as standard, with 208-250 VAC optional. Air is 5 cfm (142 L/min) at 90 psi (6.2 bar). The coolant tank holds 90 gal (341 L) with a flow of 9 gpm (34 L/min).
