Overview

The Haas DM-3 is the largest machine in the Haas drill/mill series, extending X-axis travel to 1,016 mm (40 in) while keeping the same high-speed DNA that makes the DM-1 and DM-2 popular production machines. If your parts outgrow the DM-2's 711 mm (28 in) X-travel but you still want 2,400 IPM rapids and fast tool changes through a 40-taper spindle, the DM-3 is the answer.

The spindle is the same 11.2 kW (15 hp) inline direct-drive unit found across the DM series, running at 10,000 RPM with 62 Nm (46 ft-lbf) of torque at 1,700 RPM through a CT/BT 40 taper. The 40-taper gives you real tool rigidity that BT30 drill/tap machines cannot match, making the DM-3 capable in both aluminum production and moderate steel work.

Travel is 1,016 x 508 x 508 mm (40 x 20 x 20 in), a significant step up from the DM-2 in both X and Y dimensions. The table measures 1,219 x 457 mm (48 x 18 in) and supports up to 454 kg (1,000 lb). That table size accommodates larger fixtures, multi-part setups, and tombstone configurations that would crowd a DM-2.

The 18+1 SMTC maintains the same fast tool change times as the rest of the DM series: 1.75-second tool-to-tool and 2.0-second chip-to-chip. Rapids hit 61.0 m/min (2,400 ipm) on all axes. Combined with rigid tapping to 5,000 RPM, the DM-3 minimizes non-cutting time even on jobs with many tool changes and large part traverses.

At approximately $95,000-$120,000 configured, the DM-3 fills the space between the compact DM-2 and the full-size VF-4 in the Haas lineup. It offers the DM-series speed advantage with enough travel to handle medium-sized production parts. For shops running high-volume aluminum work or mixed-material production on parts that need more than 28 inches of X-travel, the DM-3 delivers drill/mill speed on a production-capable platform. Specs derived from Haas DM-1 and DM-2 published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,016 mm (40 in) X-travel handles larger parts and multi-part fixtures that outgrow the DM-2's 28-inch envelope
  • 2,400 ipm rapids on all axes are 3-4x faster than standard VF-series machines, minimizing non-cutting time
  • 40-taper spindle with 10,000 RPM direct drive provides production speed with real tool rigidity for mixed-material work
  • 1.75-second tool-to-tool changes maintain DM-series speed on jobs with frequent tool changes
  • 454 kg (1,000 lb) table load doubles the DM-2's capacity, supporting heavier fixtures and tombstone setups
  • Same NGC control and DM-series programming as the DM-1 and DM-2 for consistent shop floor operation

Limitations

  • 15 hp spindle is adequate for production milling but underpowered for aggressive roughing in hard materials compared to VF-series 30 hp options
  • Air-cooled spindle may limit sustained high-RPM performance in extended production runs
  • Larger footprint than the DM-1 and DM-2 without the heavy-cutting capability of a full VF-4
  • No single-phase power option requires 3-phase service installation
05

Best For

Production shops running larger aluminum parts that outgrow the DM-2's 28-inch X-travel High-volume manufacturing cells where fast rapids and tool changes drive throughput on medium-sized parts Shops running multi-part fixtures or tombstone setups that need more table area than the DM-2 provides Mixed-material production environments that need 40-taper rigidity with drill/mill speed Manufacturers stepping up from DM-2 capacity without moving to a slower, heavier VF-4

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas DM-3 cost?

Base price starts around $95,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, and production options, configured price runs $105,000-$120,000. The DM-3 costs about $14,000 more than the DM-2 for the extra X and Y travel.

02 What is the difference between the DM-3 and DM-2?

The DM-3 extends X-travel from 711 mm to 1,016 mm (28 to 40 in), adds Y-travel from 406 mm to 508 mm (16 to 20 in), and provides a larger table with double the load capacity. Both share the same spindle, rapids, and tool changer. If your parts fit in 28 inches of X, the DM-2 saves money and floor space.

03 How does the DM-3 compare to the VF-4?

The VF-4 offers similar X-travel (1,016 mm) but with a 30 hp spindle option, heavier castings, and more table load capacity for steel work. The DM-3 is significantly faster in rapids and tool changes. Choose the DM-3 for high-speed production in aluminum and mild steel; choose the VF-4 for heavy-duty milling in harder materials.

04 Can the DM-3 handle 4th-axis work?

Yes. The NGC control supports 4th-axis programming and Haas offers bolt-on rotary tables. The 40-inch X-travel and 1,000 lb table load give you more room for rotary setups than the DM-1 or DM-2.
