Overview

YCM names die and mold, aerospace and automotive work as the applications of the NSV106AM, and the table backs the first of those. It is a BBT40 vertical machining center on the NSV106 frame, with travels of 1,020 x 600 x 600 mm (40.16 x 23.62 x 23.62 in), slowed down and fitted for long, accurate cuts.

Rapids are 24 m/min (945 ipm) in X and Y and 16 m/min (630 ipm) in Z, half the figures of the NSV106A. Cutting feed is 1~20,000 mm/min on X and Y and 1~16,000 mm/min on Z. A mold cavity is cut with the tool engaged almost all the time, so rapid speed adds little; smooth, controlled feed motion is what shows on the surface.

The spindle is the 12,000 rpm IDD unit with 18.5 kW (25 HP), ceramic bearings and micro oil-air lubrication, which YCM says reduces thermal deformation and suits the die and mold industry. A 15,000 rpm spindle is optional. A machine that holds its thermal state through an eight-hour finishing program saves hand polishing afterwards.

Blocks up to 700 kg (1,543 lb) sit on the 1,120 x 650 mm table, which rides on 45 mm guideways. The 24-tool disk magazine is standard, with 30-tool disk and 48-tool chain options, and tools change in 1.8 sec. For heavier blocks or more spindle power the NSV106AMS is the step up, with a 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) table.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Micro oil-air spindle lubrication, which YCM says minimizes thermal deformation
  • Per-axis cutting feed of 1~20,000 mm/min on X and Y for contouring
  • 600 mm (23.62 in) of Z travel for deep cavities and tall blocks
  • Magazine options of 30 or 48 tools beyond the standard 24

Limitations

  • Rapids of 24 m/min (945 ipm) in X and Y and 16 m/min (630 ipm) in Z are slow for production of drilled and tapped parts
  • Table load is 700 kg (1,543 lb); the NSV106AMS takes 1,000 kg (2,205 lb)
  • Spindle power is 18.5 kW (25 HP), with no higher rating listed for this model
  • Top speed is 12,000 rpm unless the 15,000 rpm option is ordered

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the NSV106AM designed for?

YCM describes it as suited to die and mold, aerospace and automotive applications. The spindle has micro oil-air lubrication to limit thermal deformation, and the axis speeds are lower than on the NSV106A, at 24/24/16 m/min.

02 What are the feed rates of the NSV106AM?

Cutting feed is listed as 1~20,000 mm/min for X and Y and 1~16,000 mm/min for Z. Rapid traverse is 24 m/min (945 ipm) in X and Y and 16 m/min (630 ipm) in Z.

03 How heavy a workpiece can it take?

The table is rated for 700 kg (1,543 lb). YCM states that the 45 mm guideways on the 3 axes have a load capacity of up to 700 kg. The table measures 1,120 x 650 mm and spindle nose to table is 100~700 mm (3.94~27.56 in).

04 What is the difference between the NSV106AM and the NSV106AMS?

The NSV106AMS has a 25 kW (34 HP) spindle with a 37 kW (50 HP) option, 24/24/24 m/min rapids and a 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) table. The NSV106AM has 18.5 kW (25 HP), 24/24/16 m/min and 700 kg (1,543 lb).
