Overview

With 40 x 20 x 28 in (1,016 x 508 x 711 mm) of travel, the Fryer MC-40B is the mid-size box way machine of the MC-B series and the one with the most Z for its footprint. Its 28 in (711 mm) of Z exceeds the 25 in (635 mm) of the MC-45B and equals the standard Z of the MC-60B, on a machine that is only 111 in (2,819 mm) wide.

That Z stroke shapes what the machine is good at. Spindle nose to table goes from 32 to 4 in (813 - 102 mm), so there is room for a 4th axis rotary table with a part on it, or for a tall fixture plus long tooling, without running out of clearance at the top. The column pays for it in height: the machine stands 110 in (2,794 mm) in operation and ships at 88 in (2,235 mm), which is worth checking against the door and the ceiling.

The table is 20 x 40 in (508 x 1,016 mm) with 5 T-slots and takes 3,000 lb (1,361 kg) evenly distributed. Y travel matches the table depth at 20 in (508 mm), and the spindle centre sits 21 in (533 mm) from the column.

In the cut the MC-40B shares the series hardware. The CAT 40 spindle turns 60 - 8,500 rpm on a 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak motor and makes 155 ft-lb (210 Nm) at 350 rpm; Fryer's table also gives 800 ft-lb (1,085 Nm) with the optional 40 hp motor and gearbox. A 24 station arm type changer swaps tools in 3 seconds. Axis thrust is 4,400 lb on X, Y and Z, and the cutting feed rate reaches 900 ipm (22.9 m/min).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 28 in (711 mm) of Z travel and up to 32 in (813 mm) from spindle nose to table on a machine 111 in (2,819 mm) wide
  • 20 x 40 in (508 x 1,016 mm) table with 5 T-slots, rated 3,000 lb (1,361 kg)
  • Peak axis thrust of 4,400 lb on X, Y and Z with box ways under each axis
  • 155 ft-lb (210 Nm) at 350 rpm from the standard 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak spindle motor
  • Rapids of 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) in X and Y

Limitations

  • Operating height is 110 in (2,794 mm), well above the 89 in (2,261 mm) of the MC-30B
  • Y travel is 20 in (508 mm); the MC-45B has 25 in (635 mm)
  • Tools are limited to 3.2 in (81 mm) in diameter with the changer full and to 15.4 lb each
  • Needs 380-500 VAC three-phase as standard, with 208-250 VAC as an option

Best For

Tall parts and fixtures that use the 28 in (711 mm) Z stroke 4th axis work with a rotary table on the 20 x 40 in (508 x 1,016 mm) table Heavy cuts in steel at low spindle speed Job shop parts up to 40 in (1,016 mm) long

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How much Z clearance does the Fryer MC-40B have?

Z travel is 28 in (711 mm), and the distance from spindle nose to table runs from 32 in down to 4 in (813 - 102 mm). The spindle cannot come closer than 4 in (102 mm) to the table, so short tools on thin parts may need a riser or a sub-plate.

02 What size table does the MC-40B have and how much can it carry?

The table is 20 x 40 in (508 x 1,016 mm) with 5 T-slots 0.708 in (18 mm) wide, and Fryer rates it at 3,000 lb (1,361 kg) evenly distributed. The table top is 35 in (889 mm) from the floor and the door opens 37 in (940 mm) wide.

03 Is the MC-40B a box way or linear guide machine?

Box way. Fryer describes the MC-B series as heavyweight castings with box way construction and lists heavy duty box ways among its features. The MC-40B weighs 12,100 lb (5,489 kg) and uses 1.57 in (40 mm) ballscrews.

04 Can the MC-40B take a 4th axis?

Fryer's options sheet for the series lists a 4th axis drive and wiring for 6" to 10" rotary tables, which makes a rotary table a full contouring axis. With up to 32 in (813 mm) between spindle nose and table there is height for the table, a chuck and the part.

05 How fast does the MC-40B move?

Rapid traverse is 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) in X and Y and 900 ipm (22.9 m/min) in Z. Cutting feed is programmable from 0.001 to 900 ipm. The arm type changer takes 3 seconds per tool change.
