How much does the AWEA SP-2016HSS cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the AWEA SP-2016HSS that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The AWEA SP-2016HSS puts a 10 ~ 15,000 rpm BT 40 spindle over a bridge frame sized for an 8,000 kg (17,600 lb) workpiece. That pairing defines it: a light, fast head above a 2,310 x 1,500 mm (90.9" x 59.0") table, with 2,100 mm (82.7") of X, 1,600 mm (63.0") of Y and 760 mm (30.0") of Z.
Set it beside the SP-2016 and the intent is plain. Travels and the 1,700 mm (66.9") column spacing are common to both. The SP-2016 has a 6,000 rpm spindle on BT50, a 22 / 26 kW (30 / 35 HP) motor and room for 20 kg (44 lb) tools up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long. The HSS version gives up that roughing capacity: 18.5 / 22 kW (25 / 30 HP), and tools no heavier than 7 kg (15 lb) or longer than 300 mm (11.8"). In return, spindle speed is two and a half times higher and the top cutting feed rises from the SP-2016's 10,000 mm/min to 15,000 mm/min.
How does it sit against the VP-2012HSS below it? The VP-2012HSS has 1,200 mm (47.2") of Y, 1,300 mm (51.2") between columns and a 3,500 kg (7,700 lb) table, so the SP-2016HSS carries more than twice the load. The smaller machine keeps two advantages. Z rapid on the VP-2012HSS is 20,000 mm/min (787.4 IPM), while here Z is 15,000 mm/min (590.6 IPM) and only X and Y reach the higher rate. Positioning accuracy is ± 0.004 mm (± 0.0002") for the VP-2012HSS and ± 0.01 mm (± 0.0004") over full travel for the SP-2016HSS. Repeatability is ± 0.003 mm (± 0.0001") on both.
A 32-tool magazine with a 12 sec. change serves the spindle. Floor space is 6,690 mm (264") in length, and the machine stands 3,890 mm (153") high. Weight and utility requirements are absent from AWEA's HSS table.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 8,000 kg (17,600 lb) table load under a 15,000 rpm spindle, more than twice the 3,500 kg (7,700 lb) of the VP-2012HSS
- 1,600 mm (63.0") of Y travel with 1,700 mm (66.9") between the columns
- Top cutting feed of 15,000 mm/min (590.6 IPM), where the SP-2016 stops at 10,000 mm/min
- Repeatability of ± 0.003 mm (± 0.0001")
- 2,310 x 1,500 mm (90.9" x 59.0") table, longer than the 2,100 mm (82.7") X stroke
Limitations
- Z rapid is 15,000 mm/min (590.6 IPM); the VP-2012HSS is listed at 20,000 mm/min (787.4 IPM)
- Positioning accuracy of ± 0.01 mm (± 0.0004") over full travel, wider than the ± 0.004 mm (± 0.0002") of the VP-2012HSS
- 18.5 / 22 kW (25 / 30 HP) and BT 40, against 22 / 26 kW (30 / 35 HP) and BT50 on the SP-2016
- Maximum tool weight of 7 kg (15 lb), where the SP-2016 takes 20 kg (44 lb)
- The table is longer than the X travel, so the ends of a full-length plate are out of the spindle's reach

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Spindle power, taper size and tool capacity. The SP-2016 is listed with 22 / 26 kW (30 / 35 HP), a BT50 taper, tools up to 20 kg (44 lb) and 400 mm (15.7 in) long. The SP-2016HSS has 18.5 / 22 kW (25 / 30 HP), BT 40, and tools up to 7 kg (15 lb) and 300 mm (11.8"). It gains spindle speed: 10 ~ 15,000 rpm against the 6,000 rpm of the SP-2016.
02
Mostly, with two differences beyond size. Against the VP-2012HSS, Y grows from 1,200 mm (47.2") to 1,600 mm (63.0"), the column gap from 1,300 mm (51.2") to 1,700 mm (66.9") and the table load from 3,500 kg (7,700 lb) to 8,000 kg (17,600 lb). X is only slightly longer at 2,100 mm (82.7"). But the Z rapid falls to 15,000 mm/min (590.6 IPM) and the listed positioning accuracy widens to ± 0.01 mm (± 0.0004").
03
AWEA lists a machine length of 6,690 mm (264") and a height of 3,890 mm (153"). The VP-2012HSS, for comparison, is 5,800 mm (228") long and 3,655 mm (144") high. The HSS table has no weight row, so the foundation load has to be requested from the maker.
04
Rapid traverse is 20,000 mm/min (787.4 IPM) in X and Y and 15,000 mm/min (590.6 IPM) in Z. The cutting feed range is 10 ~ 15,000 mm/min (0.4 ~ 590.6 IPM), so the fastest programmed feed equals the Z rapid.
05
Thirty-two BT 40 tools. Each can weigh up to 7 kg (15 lb) and measure up to 300 mm (11.8") in length; the diameter row reads 102 / 127 mm (4" / 5"). A tool change is listed at 12 sec.
