Overview

The ROMI DCM 3000 is a moving-column vertical machining center. The table is fixed, 3,200 x 840 mm (126 x 33 in), and the column carries the spindle along 3,000 mm (118 in) of X travel above it. Because the workpiece never moves, a long or heavy part does not load the axes, and the table is rated for 6,720 kg (14,800 lbs) uniformly distributed.

That layout decides what the machine is for. Romi names aerospace and railway components and large machine structures: beams, rails, long plates and extrusions. Y travel is 840 mm (33 in), the full depth of the table, and Z travel 600 mm (24 in), with 120 to 720 mm (4.7 to 28 in) between spindle nose and table.

The long table can also be split. Romi offers a central division that creates a double workspace, and describes a pendular mode in which one part is loaded and unloaded while the other is being cut. For shorter parts this turns one machine into two alternating stations, with the column travelling between them at a rapid of 30 m/min (1,181 in/min).

The spindle has an ISO 40 taper with a BT40 / BBT40 interface and a 30 hp / 22 kW motor. A double arm changer serves a 40-tool magazine built into the column, so the tools travel with the spindle and no trip to a fixed changer position is needed. Tools may be 80 mm (3.1 in) in diameter, 300 mm (11.8 in) long and 8 kg (18 lbs). Through-spindle coolant is prepared for but supplied without a pump. The column runs on linear roller guides. The machine weighs 20,000 kg (44,093 lbs) and uses a Siemens Sinumerik 828D.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Fixed table of 3,200 x 840 mm (126 x 33 in) with 3,000 mm (118 in) of X travel
  • Table load of 6,720 kg (14,800 lbs), uniformly distributed
  • Optional central division for a double workspace and pendular machining
  • 40-tool magazine built into the moving column, with a double arm changer
  • Rapid traverse of 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) in X and Y

Limitations

  • Z travel is 600 mm (24 in), so tall parts and long tools compete for height
  • ISO 40 spindle with 30 hp / 22 kW; no larger taper is listed for heavy milling
  • Tool weight is limited to 8 kg (18 lbs) and tool diameter to 80 mm (3.1 in) with full pockets
  • Through-spindle coolant is only prepared for; the pump is an option

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the ROMI DCM 3000?

X travel is 3,000 mm (118 in), Y travel 840 mm (33 in) and Z travel 600 mm (24 in). The distance from spindle nose to table is 120 to 720 mm (4.7 to 28 in). Rapid traverse is 30 m/min (1,181 in/min) in X and Y and 24 m/min (945 in/min) in Z.

02 How big is the table of the DCM 3000 and what does it carry?

The fixed table measures 3,200 x 840 mm (126 x 33 in) and has 7 T-slots of 18 x 120 mm (0.71 x 4.7 in), width by distance. Maximum weight on the table is 6,720 kg (14,800 lbs), uniformly distributed.

03 What is pendular machining on the DCM 3000?

With the optional central division the table becomes a double workspace. Romi describes the pendular mode as enabling parts loading and unloading while the machining is in progress: the column works on one side while the operator changes the part on the other.

04 What tool changer does the DCM 3000 have?

A double arm automatic tool changer with a 40-tool magazine for BT / BBT 40 shanks, built into the column. Maximum tool diameter is 80 mm (3.1 in), or 120 mm (4.7 in) when adjacent stations are empty; maximum length is 300 mm (11.8 in) and maximum weight 8 kg (18 lbs).
