Overview

The Feeler VMX-820 is where the VMX range steps up from small-part machines to a general-purpose size. Travels are 820 mm (32.3 in) in X, 520 mm (20.5 in) in Y and 560 mm (22.0 in) in Z, and the 950 x 520 mm (37.4 x 20.5 in) table is rated for 800 kg (1,764 lb). The VMX-760 below it carries 300 kg.

That jump in load rating is the real difference. Feeler says the VMX-820 and VMX-1020 enhance structural rigidity further, with a 45 mm Z-axis roller and worktable loads up to 800 kg for larger parts. In practice it means steel fixtures, a tombstone-style fourth-axis setup or a mold insert block can go on the table without the arithmetic that the smaller machines demand.

It gives up some speed for the mass. X and Y rapids are 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) and Z is 30 m/min (1,181 ipm). The magazine grows to 24 tools. The spindle is unchanged across the series at 12,000 rpm with a 7/24 No.40 taper, described by Feeler as a direct-drive BBT40 spindle.

Z deserves a second look. At 560 mm this model and the VMX-1020 have more Z than the smaller machines, and more than the pallet-changer VMX-820APC at 505 mm, which helps with tall parts on a rotary table or long tools in deep cavities. The series is built from Meehanite cast iron and, according to the maker, can be supplied with linear or hardened rails.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 kg (1,764 lb) table load, against 300 kg on the VMX-760
  • 560 mm (22.0 in) of Z travel for tall parts and long tools
  • 24-tool magazine and a 12,000 rpm direct-drive No.40 spindle
  • Feeler cites a 45 mm Z-axis roller on this model and the VMX-1020 for added rigidity
  • Y travel of 520 mm matches the 520 mm table depth

Limitations

  • X and Y rapids are 40 m/min (1,575 ipm), slower than the 48 m/min of the VMX-580 and VMX-760
  • X travel of 820 mm is shorter than the 950 mm table, so the table ends are outside the cutting area
  • Spindle speed tops out at 12,000 rpm with no faster option listed in the table
  • Spindle power, torque and machine weight are not in Feeler's series table

Best For

General job-shop milling of parts up to 820 x 520 mm Steel fixtures and heavier workpieces up to 800 kg Mold inserts and die components that need 560 mm of Z Mixed work that needs 24 tools on hand

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size parts fit the Feeler VMX-820?

The work envelope is 820 x 520 x 560 mm (32.3 x 20.5 x 22.0 in) and the table is 950 x 520 mm. Maximum loading weight is 800 kg (1,764 lb), fixtures included.

02 What is the difference between the VMX-820 and the VMX-1020?

X travel and table length. The VMX-1020 has 1,020 mm of X and a 1,150 x 520 mm table. Y, Z, table load, spindle, rapid rates and the 24-tool magazine are identical in Feeler's table, so the choice comes down to part length and floor space.

03 Is the VMX-820 a linear guide or box way machine?

Feeler states that the VMX series can be equipped with linear or hardened rails, and separately mentions a 45 mm Z-axis roller on the VMX-820 and VMX-1020. Confirm the guideway configuration of the specific machine offered, because the spec table does not record it.

04 How many tools does it hold and how fast does it move?

24 tools. Rapid traverse is 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) on X and Y and 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on Z. The table has no tool-change time, maximum tool size or cutting feed rate.
