Overview

The Fadal VMC 4020 is a box way, 40-taper vertical machining center with 40 in (1,016 mm) of X travel and 20 in (508 mm) of Y. Z travel is 20 in (508 mm) as standard and 30 in (762 mm) with the extended Z option. Fadal describes it as built for large parts and heavy metal removal, and the way system is the evidence: ground and hardened box ways running on non-metallic liners, chosen for damping over speed.

The standard spindle has two ranges. It runs to 10,000 rpm with 220 ft-lb (298 Nm) of torque and 22.5 hp (16.8 kW) peak, and takes CAT-40 holders, with BT-40 as an option. Fadal's table marks 300 ft-lb (407 Nm) and 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak as optional, and the option list names a Very High Torque Spindle (VHT); have the quote state which figures apply. A 15,000 rpm spindle is offered in grease pack and air/oil versions. Coolant through the spindle is also an extra.

Rapids are 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) on all three axes. That is slower than the VMC 4022, which covers the same X travel on linear roller guideways at 1,410 ipm (35.8 m/min). Box ways give up traverse speed and return it as stability in the cut.

The table is 47.25 x 19.75 in (1,200 x 502 mm), longer than the X stroke, and carries 1,320 lb (599 kg). On a machine of 12,140 lb (5,507 kg) that figure is the one to watch, so add up vise, rotary table and part before planning heavy fixtures.

A dual arm changer holds 24 tools, with 30 and 40 tool magazines as options. The machine measures 109 x 87 x 110 in (2,769 x 2,210 x 2,794 mm); the optional chain type chip conveyor stretches the length to 155 in (3,937 mm).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ground and hardened box ways with non-metallic liners, built for vibration damping in heavy cuts
  • Two-range spindle with 220 ft-lb (298 Nm) and 10,000 rpm as standard
  • Optional spindle figures of 300 ft-lb (407 Nm) and 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak
  • Tool capacity can grow from 24 to 30 or 40 tools
  • Z travel of 30 in (762 mm) is available for tall parts and rotary setups
  • A cooled electrical cabinet and spindle oil cooler are standard

Limitations

  • Rapids of 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) are slower than the 1,410 ipm (35.8 m/min) of the VMC 4022
  • Table load is 1,320 lb (599 kg), less than the 1,760 lb (798 kg) of the VMC 4022
  • Y travel is 20 in (508 mm), so the table depth of 19.75 in (502 mm) is all the Y there is
  • No tool change time is given in Fadal's table for this model
  • Chip conveyor, coolant through the spindle and 4th axis prewire are options

Best For

Steel and cast iron parts where box way damping matters more than rapid speed Roughing with large cutters on 220 ft-lb (298 Nm), or 300 ft-lb (407 Nm) with the optional spindle Parts up to 40 in (1,016 mm) long on a 47.25 in (1,200 mm) table Tall workpieces or trunnion setups using the 30 in (762 mm) Z option

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels and table size of the Fadal VMC 4020?

Travels are 40 in (1,016 mm) in X and 20 in (508 mm) in Y. Z is 20 in (508 mm), or 30 in (762 mm) with the extended Z option. The table measures 47.25 x 19.75 in (1,200 x 502 mm), has five T-slots and is rated for 1,320 lb (599 kg).

02 What spindle options does the VMC 4020 offer?

The standard spindle is CAT-40 with two ranges, 10,000 rpm, 220 ft-lb (298 Nm) and 22.5 hp (16.8 kW) peak. Options in Fadal's lists are a BT-40 taper, a Very High Torque Spindle (VHT), a 15,000 rpm spindle with grease pack or air/oil lubrication, and coolant through the spindle. The table shows 300 ft-lb (407 Nm) and 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak as optional figures.

03 What is the difference between the VMC 4020 and the VMC 4022?

The way system and the Y axis. The VMC 4020 uses box ways and has 20 in (508 mm) of Y and rapids of 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min). The VMC 4022 uses linear roller guideways, with 22 in (559 mm) of Y and Z and rapids of 1,410 ipm (35.8 m/min). Choose the VMC 4020 for heavy cutting and the other for fast positioning.

04 How many tools does the VMC 4020 carry?

24 in the standard dual arm changer, with random tool selection. Fadal offers 30 and 40 tool changers as options. A tool can weigh 15 lb (6.8 kg) and be 13.5 in (343 mm) long. Its diameter can be 4.9 in (124 mm), or 3.1 in (79 mm) when adjacent pockets are filled.

05 Can the VMC 4020 do 5-axis work?

Only with options. Fadal lists a 4th axis prewire, a 4th/5th axis servo disconnect for simultaneous use and RTCP (Rotational Tool Center Point). The rotary or tilting table is extra as well, and its weight counts against the 1,320 lb (599 kg) table load. The 30 in (762 mm) Z option helps recover the height a tilting table takes.
