Overview
The Haas VF-5SS is the wide-Y model in the Super Speed lineup, combining 1,270 mm (50 in) of X-travel with 660 mm (26 in) of Y and 635 mm (25 in) of Z. That extra 6 inches of Y over the VF-4SS opens up parts and fixtures that need wider table access, while the 12,000 RPM spindle and high-speed rapids keep cycle times tight.
The spindle is the same 22.4 kW (30 hp) inline direct-drive unit at 12,000 RPM with 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) of torque at 2,000 RPM, liquid-cooled and accepting CT40, BT40, or HSK-A63 tooling. The 1,372 x 610 mm (54 x 24 in) table is the widest in the medium SS lineup, with 7 T-slots on 80 mm centers and 794 kg (1,750 lb) of load capacity. That 24-inch table width with 7 slots gives you significantly more fixture layout options than the VF-3SS or VF-4SS.
Rapid traverse on the VF-5SS runs at 30.5 m/min (1,200 ipm) on all three axes, slightly slower than the 35.6 m/min (1,400 ipm) on the VF-3SS and VF-4SS. The trade-off is the wider Y-axis saddle and heavier table moving more mass. Max cutting feedrate stays at 21.2 m/min (833 ipm). Axis thrust is 14,902 N (3,350 lbf) on all three axes, which is actually higher on Z than the VF-3SS and VF-4SS.
The SMTC holds 30+1 tools (50+1 optional) with 1.8-second tool-to-tool and 2.4-second chip-to-chip times. The larger table also supports extra-large tools up to 152 mm (6 in) diameter with adjacent pockets empty, compared to the 127 mm (5 in) max on the VF-3SS and VF-4SS. Coolant capacity is 360 L (95 gal), nearly double the VF-3SS and VF-4SS at 208 L.
At 5,761 kg (12,700 lb), the VF-5SS fits between the VF-3SS and VF-4SS in weight. Starting at around $108,000, it actually costs slightly less than the VF-4SS at $115K, which makes the VF-5SS an interesting value proposition for shops that can use the extra Y-travel and wider table. Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 26 inches of Y-travel with a 54 x 24-inch table is the widest in the medium SS lineup, with 7 T-slots for flexible fixturing
- 12,000 RPM spindle and 30.5 m/min rapids deliver strong high-speed performance for aluminum work
- 360 L (95 gal) coolant capacity is nearly double the VF-3SS and VF-4SS, supporting longer unattended runs
- Costs slightly less than the VF-4SS while offering 6 more inches of Y-travel and a wider table
- 16-inch max tool length matches standard VF models, longer than the 13-inch limit on VF-3SS/VF-4SS
- Equal axis thrust on all three axes at 14,902 N provides balanced cutting capability
Limitations
- Rapids at 30.5 m/min (1,200 ipm) are about 15% slower than the VF-3SS and VF-4SS at 1,400 ipm
- 794 kg (1,750 lb) table load is the same limiting factor as the other SS models
- No gearbox option available for heavy-torque steel roughing applications
- 20 inches of Y-travel on the VF-4SS may be sufficient for many parts, making the wider VF-5SS unnecessary
- 80mm T-slot spacing differs from standard 125mm spacing on non-SS VF models

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The VF-5SS is priced at about $108K vs $115K for the VF-4SS. Despite having 6 more inches of Y-travel and a wider table, the VF-5SS uses slightly slower rapids (1,200 vs 1,400 ipm). The pricing likely reflects market positioning and production costs rather than a strict capability hierarchy.
02
The VF-6SS adds 10 more inches of X-travel (60 vs 50 in) and runs 12,000 RPM like all SS models. If your parts fit within 50 inches, the VF-5SS saves money. If you need longer reach with the wider Y-travel, the VF-6SS covers more ground.
03
The T-slot spacing differs: 80mm (3.15 in) on the VF-5SS vs. 125mm (4.92 in) on standard VF models. You may need to modify or replace fixtures that rely on specific slot positions. The slot width is the same at 0.626-0.630 inches, so standard T-slot nuts still fit.
04
The VF-5XT is a standard-speed model with extended X-travel, while the VF-5SS is a Super Speed model with 12,000 RPM, faster rapids, and a faster tool changer. They serve different purposes: the XT is for longer parts at standard speeds, the SS is for faster cycle times.
