Overview

Torque defines the Fadal VMC 6032/50T. Its CAT-50 spindle is driven through a dual range geared head and delivers 425 ft-lb (576 Nm) with 45 hp (33.6 kW) peak, at a top speed of 6,000 rpm. That is close to double the 220 ft-lb (298 Nm) of the 40-taper VMC 6032, which shares the 60 in (1,524 mm) X travel and the 61 x 30 in (1,549 x 762 mm) table.

A gearbox matters most at the bottom of the speed range. Large face mills, big drills and heavy taps want torque at a few hundred rpm, where a belt-driven spindle has little to give, and a 50-taper holder gives the cutter a stiffer connection to the spindle. The price of that is top speed. At 6,000 rpm, small tools in aluminium run well below their best cutting speed, so this is a poor choice for a shop whose work is mostly light-alloy finishing.

The tool changer is scaled to match. It holds 32 tools, or 40 as an option, and accepts tools of 35 lb (15.9 kg) and 15.75 in (400 mm) length. A change takes 2 sec tool to tool. BT-50 is available in place of CAT-50.

Under the spindle the machine follows Fadal's large box way layout: travels of 60 x 32 x 30 in (1,524 x 813 x 762 mm), quad ways on the Y axis, a 4,400 lb (1,996 kg) table load and 50 mm (2.0 in) ballscrews. Fadal also cites a wider stance, and the dimensions show it. Width is 127 in (3,226 mm), where the VMC 6032 is 118 in (2,997 mm) wide, and weight rises to 36,400 lb (16,511 kg).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Geared CAT-50 spindle with 425 ft-lb (576 Nm) of torque and 45 hp (33.6 kW) peak
  • Tool changer accepts tools up to 35 lb (15.9 kg) and 15.75 in (400 mm) long
  • 32 tools as standard, 40 optional
  • Box way construction with quad ways on the Y axis and a 36,400 lb (16,511 kg) machine weight
  • Travels of 60 x 32 x 30 in (1,524 x 813 x 762 mm) with a 4,400 lb (1,996 kg) table load

Limitations

  • Top spindle speed is 6,000 rpm, and no faster spindle is listed for this model
  • Tool change takes 2 sec tool to tool, slower than the 1.5 sec of the VMC 6032
  • Rapids are 787 ipm (20.0 m/min) in X and Y and 590 ipm (15.0 m/min) in Z
  • Maximum tool diameter with adjacent tools is 3.1 in (79 mm), so large face mills need empty pockets beside them
  • Coolant through the spindle and the chip conveyor are options

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How much torque does the Fadal VMC 6032/50T spindle have?

425 ft-lb (576 Nm), from a dual range geared head, with a motor rated 45 hp (33.6 kW) peak. Maximum speed is 6,000 rpm. The taper is CAT-50, with BT-50 as an option.

02 Should I buy the VMC 6032/50T or the 40-taper VMC 6032?

Pick by the cutting. The VMC 6032 has a CAT-40 spindle with 10,000 rpm and 220 ft-lb (298 Nm), suited to lighter tools and higher speeds. This model gives up speed, topping out at 6,000 rpm, in return for 425 ft-lb (576 Nm) and tools up to 35 lb (15.9 kg). Travels, table and table load are the same on both.

03 What tools can the VMC 6032/50T tool changer handle?

The dual arm changer holds 32 tools, with a 40 tool ATC optional, and changes in 2 sec tool to tool. Tools can weigh 35 lb (15.9 kg) and be 15.75 in (400 mm) long. Diameter is limited to 4.9 in (124 mm), or 3.1 in (79 mm) with adjacent tools in place.

04 How heavy and how large is the VMC 6032/50T?

It weighs 36,400 lb (16,511 kg) and measures 166 x 127 x 132 in (4,216 x 3,226 x 3,353 mm), length by width by height. With the optional chip conveyor the length is 220 in (5,588 mm). Plan the foundation, the rigging route and door height around those figures.

05 Does the VMC 6032/50T support a 4th axis?

As an option. Fadal lists a 4th and 5th axis prewire, a 4 axis ready servo disconnect and rotary tables such as the FR-12D, which requires that disconnect. RTCP is optional and the controller is described as 5 axis compatible. A geared 50-taper spindle and a large rotary table suit heavy indexed work on shafts and housings.
