Overview

The Hartford S PLUS-10 is a production-oriented vertical machining center: 1,020 mm (40.2 in) of X travel, 520 mm (20.5 in) of Y and 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z, with a #40 spindle and linear guideways. Hartford brands the S PLUS pair as its Production Center.

Two things set it apart from the similarly sized LG-1000. The first is power. The S PLUS-10 starts at a 7.5 / 11 kW spindle motor and offers 11 / 15 kW and 15 / 18.5 kW as options, where the LG-1000 row reads 5.5 / 7.5 / 11 kW. The second is a stated accuracy: Hartford quotes positioning accuracy within 8μm and repeatability within 5μm under its MGPS standard.

Z travel is shorter than on the LG-1000, 550 mm (21.7 in) against 630 mm (24.8 in), and the Z axis runs without a counterweight, which Hartford says gives the best dynamic accuracy. All three axes are driven by servo motors coupled directly to the ballscrews. The minimum tool change time is given as 1.38 secs.

The table is 1,150 x 520 mm (45.3 x 20.5 in) with five T-slots, listed as 18 x 100 (5) mm, and a 700 kg (1,543 lb) average load. Spindle speeds are 8,000 / 10,000 / 12,000 rpm by pulley or 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 rpm with the DDS head, and the arm-type changer holds 24 tools, or 30.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Spindle motor from 7.5 / 11 kW up to an optional 15 / 18.5 kW (Cont. / 30 min) on a one-metre 40-taper machine
  • Positioning accuracy within 8μm and repeatability within 5μm, as stated by Hartford under MGPS
  • Minimum tool change time of 1.38 secs
  • Five T-slots, listed as 18 x 100 (5) mm, across a 520 mm (20.5 in) deep table
  • Z axis without counterweight and direct-coupled ballscrew drives on all three axes

Limitations

  • Z travel of 550 mm (21.7 in) is less than the 630 mm (24.8 in) of the LG-1000
  • Table load of 700 kg (1,543 lb)
  • Magazine capacity is 24 tools, or 30; no larger magazine is listed
  • No rapid traverse rate or torque figure appears on the product page

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the main specifications of the Hartford S PLUS-10?

Travels are 1,020 mm (40.2 in) in X, 520 mm (20.5 in) in Y and 550 mm (21.7 in) in Z. The table is 1,150 x 520 mm (45.3 x 20.5 in) for 700 kg (1,543 lb). The #40 spindle runs 8,000 / 10,000 / 12,000 rpm by pulley or 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 rpm as a DDS unit.

02 How accurate is the S PLUS-10?

Hartford states positioning accuracy within 8μm and repeatability accuracy within 5μm for the S PLUS under its MGPS (Micro Grade Process and Standard) programme. A headline on the same page gives the positioning figure as ± 8 μm (VDI).

03 What spindle motor does the S PLUS-10 have?

The base motor is 7.5 / 11 kW. Options are 11 / 15 kW and 15 / 18.5 kW, all given as continuous / 30 min ratings. Which spindle speed each motor is paired with is not stated on the page.

04 How does the S PLUS-10 differ from the S PLUS-8?

The S PLUS-8 is the shorter version, with 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel, a 950 x 520 mm (37.4 x 20.5 in) table and a 500 kg (1,102 lb) load rating. Y and Z travel, spindle lists, motor options and magazine are the same.
