Overview

The Flex Machine Tools G-10-06 is a vertical machining center sized for plate: 120″ of X, 72″ of Y and 19.5″ of Z, with a 40 HP spindle that runs to 6,000 RPM. The spindle taper is CT50 or CT40, and the tool changer is listed at 20 tools for the CT50 version.

The 72″ of Y is what separates it from the C-10-02, which has the same 120″ of X but 24″ of Y, 17.5″ of Z and an 18 HP CT40 spindle. Three times the Y travel and more than twice the power make the G-10-06 the machine for wide plates, frames and weldments, where the C-10-02 is for long narrow stock.

Taper is a real decision here. CT50 holders carry larger cutters and suit the 40 HP rating in heavy face milling and large drilling. CT40 keeps tooling common with a shop's smaller machines. Flex's table gives the 20-tool capacity against CT50 only, so ask what the changer holds if the CT40 spindle is chosen. Neither torque nor a gear range is listed.

Rapids are up to 1200 IPM in X and 1000 IPM in Y. Z is the slow axis at up to 170 IPM, where the C-10-02 lists 300 IPM. Spindle-to-table distance runs from 4.25″ to 23.75″. Positioning accuracy is ±0.003 in on X and ±0.002 in on Y and Z, and repeatability is ±0.0007 in on X and ±0.0005 in on Y and Z.

The work sits on three integrated T-slot rails, coolant capacity is 90 gallons and chips leave by auger. Control is the Omron FlexCNC controller with a mobile 22″ touch screen panel and a hand pendant (AMI5000 remote pendant). Flex lists X strokes from 10′ up to 50′ and Y strokes from 4′ up to 10′ as available.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 120″ × 72″ of X and Y travel with 19.5″ of Z
  • 40 HP spindle, against 18 HP on the C-10-02
  • Choice of CT50 or CT40 spindle taper
  • 20-tool automatic changer with tool calibrator on the CT50 version
  • Rapids of up to 1200 IPM in X and 1000 IPM in Y
  • Spindle-to-table distance from 4.25″ to 23.75″

Limitations

  • Z rapid is 170 IPM, against 300 IPM on the C-10-02
  • Spindle speed stops at 6,000 RPM, and the table lists no torque figure
  • Tool capacity is stated for CT50 only; the CT40 count is not in the table
  • The table lists no 4th-axis option for this model

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Which spindle taper does the G-10-06 use, CT50 or CT40?

Either. Flex lists the spindle taper as CT50 or CT40, with 40 HP and a maximum of 6,000 RPM. The 20-tool capacity in the table is given for CT50. If you plan to order CT40, confirm the tool count and the power rating for that spindle with Flex.

02 How does the G-10-06 compare with the C-10-02?

Both have 120″ of X travel. The G-10-06 has 72″ of Y, 19.5″ of Z and a 40 HP spindle with 20 tools on CT50. The C-10-02 has 24″ of Y, 17.5″ of Z, an 18 HP CT40 spindle, 16 tools and a faster Z rapid at 300 IPM against 170 IPM.

03 What are the travels and clearances of the G-10-06?

X is 120″, Y is 72″ and Z is 19.5″. Spindle-to-table distance ranges from 4.25″ to 23.75″. Flex also lists X strokes from 10′ up to 50′ and Y strokes from 4′ up to 10′ as available, and the G-20-06 is the catalogued size with 240″ of X.

04 How accurate is the G-10-06?

Positioning accuracy is ±0.003 in on X and ±0.002 in on Y and Z; repeatability is ±0.0007 in on X and ±0.0005 in on Y and Z. For bolt patterns spread across a large plate, compare the drawing tolerance with the positioning figures, not the repeatability figures.

05 What control and coolant system does the G-10-06 have?

The control is the Omron FlexCNC controller, operated from a mobile control panel with a 22″ touch screen monitor, with a hand pendant (AMI5000 remote pendant) as well. The coolant tank holds 90 gallons and a chip auger removes the chips.
