Overview

The Anderson FDC-1417 is the shortest double column machining center in the FDC-14 series. The 14 stands for the 1,400 mm (55.1 in) Y travel that all four models share; this one pairs it with 1,700 mm (66.9 in) of X and 900 mm (35.4 in) of Z. The table is 1,700 x 1,200 mm (66.9 x 47.2 in) and carries 5,000 kg (11,023 lb).

With X and Y this close together, the FDC-1417 has a nearly square work envelope, and that is what separates it from a large C-frame vertical. A C-frame with similar X typically offers much less Y. A bridge spanning two columns supports the spindle from both sides across the full 1,400 mm, so the head is as stiff over the far edge of the table as over the middle. Anderson describes the structure as a rigid double column with wide column spacing.

The spindle is built for torque, not speed. It takes ISO 50 tooling, tops out at 8,000 rpm and is driven by a 15/18.5 kW motor through a 2-step gear head. The draw bar force is 1,800 kgf and the spindle inner diameter Ø100 mm (Ø3.9 in). Tools up to 350 mm (13.8 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb) are held in a disk or chain magazine listed as 24/32.

Being the shortest, it is also the quickest in X: the rapid feed rate is 20/20/20 m/min, where the FDC-1422 is limited to 16 m/min in X and the FDC-1442 to 12 m/min. Weight is 15,500 kg (34,171 lb) on a floor space of 5,800 x 4,150 mm (228.3 x 163.4 in). Anderson lists FANUC, Mitsubishi, Siemens, Fagor and Heidenhain as control choices.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Y travel with 1,700 mm (66.9 in) of X under a double column bridge
  • ISO 50 spindle with a 2-step gear head and 1,800 kgf of draw bar force
  • Fastest X rapid in the series at 20/20/20 m/min
  • Table load of 5,000 kg (11,023 lb)
  • Choice of five control makes, including FANUC, Siemens and Heidenhain

Limitations

  • Spindle speed is limited to 8,000 rpm, with no faster option in the table
  • Table is 1,200 mm wide against 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Y travel, so the table does not use the full Y
  • Needs 5,800 x 4,150 mm (228.3 x 163.4 in) of floor and 4,440 mm (174.8 in) of height
  • No positioning accuracy or repeatability figure is listed for the series

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the FDC-1417?

1,700 mm (66.9 in) in X, 1,400 mm (55.1 in) in Y and 900 mm (35.4 in) in Z. The table is 1,700 x 1,200 mm (66.9 x 47.2 in) and its maximum load is 5,000 kg (11,023 lb).

02 What spindle does the FDC-1417 have?

An ISO 50 spindle at up to 8,000 rpm with a 15/18.5 kW motor. Anderson describes a 2-step gear head that provides separate torque and speed ranges. Draw bar force is 1,800 kgf and the spindle inner diameter is Ø100 mm (Ø3.9 in). The table lists no torque figure.

03 Which CNC controls can the FDC-1417 be ordered with?

Anderson says buyers can choose from five control systems: FANUC, Mitsubishi, Siemens, Fagor or Heidenhain. The specification table does not name particular control models, so the exact control and its options are part of the quotation.

04 How does the FDC-1417 compare with the FDC-1422?

The FDC-1422 adds X travel: 2,200 mm (86.6 in) against 1,700 mm (66.9 in). The FDC-1422 has an X rapid of 16 m/min and weighs 16,000 kg (35,273 lb) against 15,500 kg (34,171 lb). Table load, Y and Z travels, spindle and magazine are the same.
