Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Tormach 1100M that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Tormach 1100M is a stepper-driven bed mill with an R8 spindle, sold as a bare machine that the owner builds up. Its X, Y and Z travels are 18 in (457 mm), 11 in (279 mm) and 16.25 in (412 mm). The spindle is rated 2 hp (1.5 kW), turns at up to 7,500 rpm and is driven through a Poly-V belt.
No other Tormach mill has a lower top spindle speed. The 770M, a smaller machine, reaches 10,000 rpm; this one stops at 7,500 rpm, which favours larger cutters and steel over small end mills in aluminium. Axis feed is the lowest in the range as well: 110 ipm (2.79 m/min) in X and Y, 90 ipm (2.29 m/min) in Z.
Tormach is plain about what its M line leaves out. These machines have no positional feedback; the controller assumes an axis that was told to move did move the designated amount. Without a spindle encoder there is no rigid tapping either, so threads are cut with a tension/compression holder, an auto-reversing head or a thread mill. The R8 spindle takes TTS holders, a straight shank system proprietary to Tormach.
What the buyer gets in return is a low-commitment start. The machine-only configuration is just the base mill and the PathPilot CNC controller. Stand, backsplash, oil pump, vise and toolholders come with the Essentials package, and the Premium package includes the enclosure, power drawbar, probe, flood coolant and a 12-pocket automatic tool changer. Tormach also offers the RapidTurn CNC chucker lathe as an accessory.
Size and services: the table carries 500 lb (227 kg), a typical system weighs 1,600 lb (726 kg), and it needs 69 in × 56.5 in (1,753 mm × 1,435 mm) of floor under 96 in (2,438 mm) of height. The supply is single-phase 208-240 Vac with a 20 A breaker.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
No. The specification lists three tapping methods for this model: tension/compression, auto-reversing and thread mill. Tormach explains that rigid tapping on its mills depends on an encoded spindle, which the MX machines have and the M machines do not. If tapped holes are a large share of the work, the 1100MX lists rigid tapping and has the same X and Y travels.
02
The spindle taper is R8. Tormach says its PCNC and M machines have an R8 collet in the spindle and use TTS tool holders, a straight shank holder that is proprietary to Tormach. The MX machines use BT30 instead, which Tormach describes as a more rigid connection between spindle and tool that reduces the risk of tool pull out.
03
Maximum feed rate is 110 ipm (2.79 m/min) in X and Y and 90 ipm (2.29 m/min) in Z, and the axes are stepper driven. For comparison, the 1100MX is listed at 300 ipm (7.62 m/min) in X and Y and 230 ipm (5.84 m/min) in Z. Tormach says MX machines generally have 20% faster cycle times, depending on tool path and part geometry.
04
A typical system has a footprint of 69 in × 56.5 in (1,753 mm × 1,435 mm) and an overall height of 96 in (2,438 mm), and weighs 1,600 lb (726 kg). The supply is single-phase 208-240 Vac, 50/60 Hz, on a 20 A breaker, through a NEMA 6-20P plug into a NEMA 6-20R receptacle. Tormach ships its machines in crates for the owner to assemble and commission, and offers assembly as an add-on service.
05
A 2 hp (1.5 kW) spindle with an R8 taper, driven through a Poly-V belt, with a maximum speed of 7,500 rpm. Small cutters in aluminium will run slower here than on the 10,000 rpm spindle of the 770M, while the longer travels and the 500 lb (227 kg) table rating suit bigger parts.
