Overview

The Fehlmann PICOMAX 95 is a vertical-column machining center with 800 mm (31.5 in) of X, 500 mm (19.7 in) of Y and 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z, a 1,600 x 550 mm clamping surface and an HSK-A63 motor spindle. It is a 3-axis machine that Fehlmann prepares for a fully integrated 4th or 5th axis, which can be added at any time.

The long table is what makes the concept work. An ATS 160 or ATS 200 dividing and swivelling unit, with 160 mm or 200 mm centre height, takes up one part of it, and Fehlmann notes there is still space beside the unit for vices. The specification gives the rotary ranges as B -10° to 120° and C 0° to 360°. So small cubic parts can run in 5 axes at one end while a plate or a bulky 3-axis part is clamped at the other, without a changeover.

Spindle power is at the upper end of what Fehlmann lists. The 50 - 14,000 rpm and 50 - 18,000 rpm spindles are rated 26.3 kW (35.3 hp) and the 50 - 24,000 rpm spindle 25 kW (33.5 hp), all at S6 (40% ED) and with active spindle cooling. Fehlmann aims the machine at tough materials and hardened tool steel, and names mould plates in tool steel up to 800 x 500 mm as an application.

The chain magazine has 48 or 80 pockets. The table-to-spindle-nose distance is 160 - 770 mm, and the feed rate / rapid feed row reads 1-30,000 mm/min. One large door opens the machining area from the front and from the top, and automation can be retrofitted with loading from the side. The machine weighs 8,600 kg (18,959 lb) and the installation space is 3 / 2.2 / 3.1 m (W/D/H). The control is a Heidenhain TNC7.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 x 500 x 610 mm travels over a 1,600 x 550 mm (63.0 x 21.7 in) clamping surface
  • HSK-A63 motor spindles with up to 26.3 kW (35.3 hp) and active spindle cooling
  • Can be fitted with an ATS 160 or ATS 200 unit for 4- or 5-axis machining at any time
  • Chain magazine with 48 or 80 tool pockets
  • Machine base, column and head in vibration-isolating cast iron, 8,600 kg (18,959 lb) in total
  • One door opens the machining area from the front and from the top

Limitations

  • The 4th and 5th axes are an add-on unit on the table, not part of the base machine
  • Top spindle speed is 24,000 rpm; the PICOMAX 75 is offered up to 36,000 rpm
  • The feed rate / rapid feed row stops at 30,000 mm/min, below the 50,000 mm/min of the VERSA 945
  • Needs an installation space of 3 m by 2.2 m and 3.1 m of height
  • Through-spindle high-pressure coolant with chip conveyor and the measuring systems are options

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the PICOMAX 95 a 3-axis or a 5-axis machine?

Both, depending on equipment. The base machine has X, Y and Z travels of 800, 500 and 610 mm. Each PICOMAX 95 can be equipped with an ATS 160 or ATS 200 dividing and swivelling unit, and the 4th and 5th axes are then fully integrated in the control. The specification lists B as -10° to 120° and C as 0° to 360°.

02 What spindles are available on the PICOMAX 95?

Three HSK-A63 motor spindle versions with active cooling: 50 - 14,000 rpm and 50 - 18,000 rpm, both rated 26.3 kW (35.3 hp), and 50 - 24,000 rpm rated 25 kW (33.5 hp). The ratings are at S6 (40% ED). Fehlmann describes the spindles as suited to both conventional roughing and HSC machining.

03 How big is the table of the PICOMAX 95?

The clamping surface is 1,600 x 550 mm (63.0 x 21.7 in). X travel is 800 mm, so the table is twice as long as the stroke. That is deliberate: a dividing and swivelling unit can stay mounted at one side with vices next to it, and the working area moves between them.

04 How does the PICOMAX 95 compare with the PICOMAX 75?

The PICOMAX 75 is the smaller machine, with 600 x 400 x 610 mm travels, a 1,160 x 475 mm clamping surface, a weight of 5,300 kg and spindles from 14,000 to 36,000 rpm with at most 19.5 kW. The PICOMAX 95 has 800 x 500 x 610 mm, a 1,600 x 550 mm surface, 8,600 kg and up to 26.3 kW, but tops out at 24,000 rpm.

05 Can automation be added to the PICOMAX 95?

Yes. Fehlmann states that the freely configurable automation can be retrofitted at any time and is loaded from the side, so the side entry keeps the machining area accessible. The large door still opens the work area from the front and from the top for manual and crane loading.
