Overview

The Kent CNC KVR-4020A is the largest of the three KVR vertical machining centers, with travels of 39.4 x 19.7 x 20.5 in (1,001 x 500 x 521 mm) and a 43.3 x 19.7 in (1,100 x 500 mm) table rated for 1,760 lb (798 kg). At 9,636 lb (4,371 kg) it is also the heaviest of the series.

What does not grow with the frame is the spindle. All three sizes share the 10,000 rpm, 15 hp (11.2 kW) CAT 40 unit and the 24+1 tool magazine, so the KVR-4020A offers more room, not more cutting power. Mold bases, plates and weldments that fit the envelope will be machined at the same metal removal rates as on the KVR-2418A, which has a 29.9 x 18.1 in (759 x 460 mm) table and a 1,320 lb (599 kg) rating. For steel roughing with large cutters, size the cut to 15 hp (11.2 kW) and not to the table.

The vertical axis has room to match the table. Z travel is 20.5 in (521 mm), and the spindle nose comes within 3.1 in (79 mm) of the table and retracts to 23.6 in (599 mm). Combined with an 11.8 in (300 mm) maximum tool length, that leaves clearance for a tall part under a long tool. Spindle center to column is 21.9 in (556 mm), which covers the 19.7 in (500 mm) of Y travel.

Heat is managed at the spindle with a chilled jacket housing and a chilled motor mount on a refrigeration system. On the larger parts this machine takes, cycle times run long, and a spindle held at a steady temperature keeps Z depth from drifting between the first feature and the last. The axes use roller type linear guide ways and C-3 grade high precision double pre-tensioned ball screws.

Preparation for a 4th axis and for through spindle coolant, with a 1000 psi capable union and hoses, is listed. Chips leave by a flush system and an auger-type conveyor. Allow 12.3 x 12.1 x 8.9 ft (3,749 x 3,688 x 2,713 mm) for the machine. Programming is on the Fanuc 0i-MF with Fanuc Manual Guide 0i.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 39.4 x 19.7 x 20.5 in (1,001 x 500 x 521 mm) of travel over the largest table of the three KVR sizes
  • 43.3 x 19.7 in (1,100 x 500 mm) table rated at 1,760 lb (798 kg), against 1,540 lb (699 kg) on the KVR-3618A
  • Spindle nose to table distance of 3.1-23.6 in (79-599 mm) with tools up to 11.8 in (300 mm) long
  • Refrigerated cooling of the spindle jacket housing and spindle motor mount
  • Roller type linear guide ways and C-3 grade double pre-tensioned ball screws
  • Prepared for a 4th axis and for through spindle coolant with a 1000 psi capable union

Limitations

  • Spindle power stays at 15 hp (11.2 kW), the same as the smaller KVR-2418A and KVR-3618A
  • Tool weight is limited to 12.1 lb (5 kg) and tool diameter to 3 in (76 mm), which restricts large face mills
  • Heaviest and largest of the series: 9,636 lb (4,371 kg) and 12.3 x 12.1 x 8.9 ft (3,749 x 3,688 x 2,713 mm)
  • The 4th axis and through spindle coolant are listed as ready-prep, not as fitted equipment

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the KVR-4020A?

X travel is 39.4 in (1,001 mm), Y travel 19.7 in (500 mm) and Z travel 20.5 in (521 mm). The table measures 43.3 x 19.7 in (1,100 x 500 mm) and is 37 in (940 mm) from the floor. Spindle nose to table distance is 3.1-23.6 in (79-599 mm).

02 How much weight can the KVR-4020A table carry?

Maximum table load is 1,760 lb (798 kg). That is the highest of the three KVR sizes: the KVR-3618A is rated at 1,540 lb (699 kg) and the KVR-2418A at 1,320 lb (599 kg). The figure has to cover the part, the fixture and any rotary table.

03 Does the KVR-4020A have a bigger spindle than the smaller KVR models?

No. The KVR-4020A has a 10,000 rpm CAT 40 spindle rated 15 hp (11.2 kW), with BT-40 optional. The KVR-2418A and KVR-3618A list the same 10,000 rpm and 15 hp (11.2 kW). The larger model adds travel, table area and load capacity.

04 What does the KVR-4020A include for chip and coolant handling?

The listed specification includes a chip flush system and an auger-type chip conveyor. Through spindle coolant is ready-prep, with a 1000 psi capable union and hoses, which means the spindle is plumbed for it; ask whether the pump is part of the quoted machine.

05 What control does the KVR-4020A run?

The Fanuc 0i-MF with a 10.4 in color LCD. Fanuc Manual Guide 0i is listed for conversational programming at the machine. The 24+1 tool double arm side-mount changer swaps tools in 1.3 s.
