Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Sharp SVG-8743A-F that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Step up from four box ways to six and the Sharp SVG-8743A-F is what you get: a geared-head CAT 50 machining center with 86.61 in (2200 mm) of X, 43.31 in (1100 mm) of Y and 35.43 in (900 mm) of Z, weighing 52,910 lb (24,000 kg).
The six ways are the point of the design. Sharp's guideway table shows the Y axis carried on six square ways spread across 110.23 in (2800 mm), so the 94.49 x 39.37 in (2400 x 1000 mm) table stays supported at the ends of its stroke instead of hanging off a narrow saddle. X runs on two 7.09 in ways spaced 30.51 in (775 mm) apart. All are lined with turcite B.
Z is generous for a vertical. The spindle nose can sit anywhere from 9.45 to 44.88 in (240-1140 mm) above the table, which admits tall weldments and stacked fixtures but means short tools will not reach a thin plate clamped flat. The spindle itself is shared with the rest of the SVG range: 6000 rpm, 2 speed gear, 22/26 kW and 427 ft-lb.
Mass costs speed. Rapids are 472 in/min on X and 315 in/min on Y and Z, with cutting feed to 197 in/min (5 m/min). The side-mount magazine holds 40 tools. Sharp publishes two different maximum workpiece weights for this model in inch and metric, so that row is left out of the table here; confirm the table load with Sharp before planning heavy work.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Six hardened and ground box ways, with the Y axis supported across 110.23 in (2800 mm)
- Spindle nose to table distance up to 44.88 in (1140 mm) for tall parts
- 40-tool side-mount changer taking tools to 33 lb (15 kg)
- Y ball screw of ø63 with a 10 mm pitch, larger than the ø50 screws on X and Z
- 98.43 in (2500 mm) door opening
Limitations
- Y and Z rapids are 315 in/min (8 m/min)
- Minimum spindle nose to table distance is 9.45 in (240 mm)
- Sharp's inch and metric figures for table load disagree, so the capacity must be confirmed
- Occupies 244.72 x 154.13 in (6216 x 3915 mm) of floor
- A coolant through spindle pump is optional; only the 30 Bar CTS preparation is standard

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Sharp states that the 6 slide ways are hand scraped, hardened and ground, and that box ways damp vibration better than linear ways and are less susceptible to damage in a crash because of their large contact surface. The guideway table lists six ways on the Y axis over a 110.23 in (2800 mm) span.
02
It is larger in every axis: 86.61 in (2200 mm) of X against 62.99 in (1600 mm) on the SVG-6336A-F, with Y of 43.31 in (1100 mm) and Z of 35.43 in (900 mm). It uses six box ways where the SVG-6336A-F has four, and weighs 52,910 lb (24,000 kg). The 6000 rpm CAT 50 spindle is common to both.
03
A FANUC Oi-MF with a 10.4" LCD color screen. Standard accessories include an oil skimmer, spindle chiller, 4th axis prep (no motor, no drive), rigid tapping with NANO interpolation, 30 Bar CTS prep, a full enclosure with door interlock and 1024 K memory. AICC 200 blocks look ahead and a rotary table are options.
04
Rapid traverse is 472 / 315 / 315 in/min (12 / 8 / 8 m/min) on X, Y and Z, and the cutting feed rate goes to 197 in/min (5 m/min). Positioning accuracy is 0.01 mm and repeatability 0.006 mm to the JIS standard.
