Overview

Eighteen metres of X travel, a 4,000 mm wide table: the Hartford MCW-18550 is built for very long, comparatively narrow work. In figures, X travel is 18,000 mm (708.7 in), Y travel 5,500 mm (216.5 in) and the fixed table 18,000 x 4,000 mm (708.7 x 157.5 in).

Parts of that length exist in a few industries. Wind turbine components, ship engine bedplates, long crane girders, rail vehicle side frames and the beds of other large machine tools are typical. None of them can sensibly be moved under a spindle, which is why a moving-column layout is used: the part is levelled once on the table and the machine travels along it.

Over such a distance Hartford relies on support for the screws and on a doubled X drive. Its list for the series includes X/Y-axis ballscrew support, an X axis with twin servo motors and twin reducers, and backlash reduced to ensure accuracy of 0.01 mm.

The table carries 3,000 kg/m². The cross-beam rises 1,800 mm on the W axis, or 2,100 mm, and the ram has 1,000 mm of Z travel with 1,200 and 1,400 mm options. Spindle choices are a #50 gear head at 6,000 or 8,000 rpm and a 10,000 rpm hybrid.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 18,000 mm (708.7 in) of X travel
  • Part stays stationary on an 18,000 x 4,000 mm fixed table
  • X/Y-axis ballscrew support and twin-motor X drive
  • W-axis cross-beam travel of 1,800 mm, optionally 2,100 mm

Limitations

  • Table is 4,000 mm wide; the MCW-18650 has 5,000 mm (196.9 in)
  • Only two longer steps exist, to 20,000 mm (787.4 in) on the MCW-20550
  • Load rating is 3,000 kg/m²

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long a part can the MCW-18550 machine?

X travel and table length are both 18,000 mm (708.7 in). The table is 4,000 mm (157.5 in) wide and Y travel is 5,500 mm (216.5 in).

02 Why does the MCW-18550 have a fixed table?

It is a moving-column machine: the columns and cross-beam travel along X and the workpiece does not move. That suits parts too long or heavy to be carried on a moving table, and it is why the load is given as 3,000 kg/m².

03 What does Hartford do to keep an 18-metre X axis accurate?

The series description lists X/Y-axis ballscrew support, an X axis with twin servo motors and twin reducers, and backlash reduced to ensure accuracy of 0.01 mm. The spec table itself gives no positioning accuracy for X.

04 What is the longest MCW model?

The MCW-20550 and MCW-20650, both with 20,000 mm (787.4 in) of X travel. The MCW-18550 is one step below them at 18,000 mm.
