Overview
The Johnford VMC-2000SHD is a 20,000 kg (44,000 lb) vertical machining center with a BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle and 2,050 mm (80.7 in) of X travel. It is the heavy-cutting counterpart of the VMC-2000S, sharing that model's 2,200 x 1,000 mm (86.6 x 39.4 in) table, 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of Y and 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z.
What kind of work justifies it? Parts that are long, heavy and need metal removed in quantity: machine beds, mold frames, structural plates, large die shoes. The table takes 4,800 kg (10,560 lb), and the spindle delivers 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) through an automatic Hi-Lo gearbox at 10-4,500 rpm. The VMC-2000S, with the smaller BT-40 / CAT-40 head, has 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp), which is the practical argument for the HD on a machine this large.
Feeds are conservative. Johnford lists rapid traverse of 15 / 15 / 12 m/min (591 / 591 / 472 ipm) and cutting feed of 1~8,000 mm/min, with Φ63 ball screws on X and Y and Φ50 on Z. For heavy milling those limits are rarely reached; they matter more for air-cutting time on a table over two metres long.
The 20-tool armless changer accepts tools to 15 kg (33 lb) and 400 mm (15.7 in). Since large cutters of 250 mm (9.8 in) need empty neighbours, a buyer running several of them should price the arm type magazines on the option list.
