Overview

With 850 mm (33.5 in) of Y travel, the Hedelius FORTE 85 Single 1620 is the wide one among the compact FORTE 3-axis machines. X is 1,620 mm (63.8 in), Z is 700 mm (27.6 in), and the fixed table offers a clamping area of 1,800 x 900 mm. An 80-position tool changer is standard.

That Y figure decides what the machine is for. Plates and welded frames that would overhang a narrower table sit fully supported here, on seven 18 mm T-slots at 125 mm spacing. Table load is printed as 1,500 / 2,000 kg, two values the data sheet leaves unexplained. The spindle distance runs from 120 to 820 mm.

Hedelius draws attention to the operator's side of things: a large machine window, a fixed table at an ergonomic working height, and direct access to the workpiece. Vertical stainless steel covers let chips fall away, and the maker specifically mentions machining aluminium in bulk, with little time spent on cleaning.

Five spindles are in the data sheet. In SK40 / BT40 there are two 14,000 rpm units, with 117 Nm and 22 kW or with 185 Nm and 37 kW. In HSK A63 the choice is 18,000 rpm with 35 kW, 14,000 rpm with 22 kW, or 15,000 rpm with 217 Nm and 50 kW. A 24,000 rpm spindle with 30 kW appears on the product page. Tool length is 330 or 390 mm depending on the magazine, and chip-to-chip time is ca. 9.7 s. At 11,300 kg (24,912 lb) and 3,480 mm transport width this is no longer a small machine to bring in, even if Hedelius files it under its compact line.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 850 mm of Y travel and a 1,800 x 900 mm fixed table with seven 18 mm T-slots
  • 80-position tool changer as standard, with theoretical capacities up to 344
  • SK40 / BT40 spindle with 185 Nm and 37 kW, or HSK A63 with 217 Nm and 50 kW
  • Large machine window and fixed table at an ergonomic working height for direct access
  • Vertical stainless steel covers for chip fall, which Hedelius relates to bulk aluminium machining

Limitations

  • 11,300 kg (24,912 lb) and 3,480 mm transport width for a machine with 1,620 mm of X
  • Table load is given as 1,500 / 2,000 kg without an explanation of the two figures
  • Three axes only in the data sheet
  • Tool weight is limited to 5 kg; other weights are on request

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels and table of the FORTE 85 Single 1620?

X 1,620 mm (63.8 in), Y 850 mm (33.5 in) and Z 700 mm (27.6 in). The fixed table has a clamping area of 1,800 x 900 mm and seven 18 mm T-slots at 125 mm spacing. The spindle distance is 120 to 820 mm.

02 How many tools does the FORTE 85 Single 1620 hold?

80 tools as standard. The data sheet gives theoretical capacities of 80 / 150 / 195 / 260 / 344 with standby magazines. A tool can be 75 mm in diameter with all places full, 330 / 390 mm long and 5 kg, and a change takes ca. 9.7 s chip to chip.

03 Which spindles can be ordered on the FORTE 85 Single 1620?

SK40 / BT40 at 14,000 rpm with 117 Nm and 22 kW or with 185 Nm and 37 kW; HSK A63 at 18,000 rpm with 136 Nm and 35 kW, at 14,000 rpm with 22 kW, or at 15,000 rpm with 217 Nm and 50 kW. The product page adds a 24,000 rpm HSK A63 spindle with 123 Nm and 30 kW.

04 Is the FORTE 85 Single 1620 suited to aluminium?

Hedelius says its vertical stainless steel covers ensure optimised chip fall even when machining aluminium in bulk, so little time goes on cleaning. The 18,000 rpm HSK A63 spindle with 35 kW and the 40 m/min feeds on all axes are the figures that matter for that work.
