5-Axis Machining Centers

A 5-axis machining center adds two rotary axes to the three linear ones, so the tool can meet the part from almost any direction. Some machines tilt and rotate the table, on a trunnion or a swivelling rotary table. Others tilt the spindle head and leave the part still, which suits large and heavy workpieces. Either way, a part with features on five sides can be finished in one clamping, and shorter tools can be used because the head or the table tilts out of the way.

Not every job needs all five axes moving at once. Much of the work is positional, often called 3+2: the rotary axes set an angle, lock, and the machine cuts in three axes. Impellers, blades and sculpted mould surfaces need simultaneous motion. If the part is mostly round, a mill-turn machine may fit better. If it is prismatic and runs in volume on pallets, look at horizontal machining centers. Plain three-axis work belongs on a vertical machining center.

Beyond the linear travels, compare the range of the two rotary axes, the table diameter and the load the table carries. Check the largest part diameter and height that actually swing through the work area, which is smaller than the travels suggest. Spindle speed, taper and torque follow the material. Tool capacity and the automation interfaces matter if the machine is meant to run unattended.
