Overview

The DATRON neo is a compact 3-axis portal machine: 520 x 420 x 220 mm (20.5 x 16.5 x 8.7 in) of travel, a 2.0 kW (2.7 hp) HF spindle running to 40,000 rpm, and a footprint of 805 mm x 1,450 mm (31.7 in x 57.1 in) before the operating terminal is added. The work envelope is 500 mm x 400 mm x 175 mm (19.7 in x 15.7 in x 6.9 in), with the Z figure being the portal passage.

The spindle takes tools by direct shank, and no holder-based interface is listed. That keeps tooling simple. It also makes this a small-tool machine in the plain sense: 2.0 kW at high speed, with the cutter clamped by its own shank. The tool-holding fixture has 24 stations and comes with a tool length probe, and a DATRON 3D probe for workpiece measurement appears in the table without an optional marking.

Against the neo Entry, the neo is the fuller specification on the same travels. The neo Entry has a 1.0 kW (1.3 hp) spindle at 27,000 rpm, a 12-station fixture, and the DATRON next Entry control, for which no additional software options are available. The neo runs DATRON next and moves at up to 28 m/min (1,102 ipm) in rapid and in feed.

Cooling is minimum-quantity lubrication through a 2-nozzle spray ring from a 5 or 10 liter tank. The one listed axis option is the DATRON Axis4 for 3+1 work. With the terminal, a 24-inch multi-touch screen with a hand-held control unit, the machine measures 1,320 mm x 1,450 mm x 1,900 mm (52.0 in x 57.1 in x 74.8 in). It weighs approximately 740 kg (1,631 lb). The next size up, the M8Cube, is approximately 1,300 kg (2,866 lb) and reaches 60,000 rpm with spindles up to 4.0 kW (5.4 hp).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2.0 kW (2.7 hp) HF spindle running to 40,000 rpm, against 1.0 kW (1.3 hp) and 27,000 rpm on the neo Entry
  • 24 tool stations with a tool length probe, twice the 12 stations of the neo Entry
  • Feed and rapid traverse up to 28 m/min (1,102 ipm)
  • Footprint of 805 mm x 1,450 mm (31.7 in x 57.1 in) without the terminal and a weight of approximately 740 kg (1,631 lb)
  • A DATRON 3D probe for workpiece measurement appears in the table without an optional marking
  • Runs the DATRON next control, where the neo Entry has DATRON next Entry with no additional software options available

Limitations

  • Work envelope is 500 mm x 400 mm x 175 mm (19.7 in x 15.7 in x 6.9 in); larger parts belong on the M8Cube
  • Direct shank only: no HSK interface is listed, unlike the M8Cube, which offers HSK-E 25
  • Spindle power is 2.0 kW (2.7 hp), half the 4.0 kW (5.4 hp) available at the top of the M8Cube range
  • The DATRON Axis4 is an option and no 3+2 configuration is listed
  • Coolant is minimum-quantity lubrication from a 5 or 10 liter tank; no flood system is listed

Best For

Small parts within 500 mm x 400 mm x 175 mm (19.7 in x 15.7 in x 6.9 in) Small-diameter tool work at up to 40,000 rpm Rooms with limited floor space: 805 mm x 1,450 mm (31.7 in x 57.1 in) without the terminal Jobs using up to 24 tools, each checked by the tool length probe 3+1 work on small parts with the optional DATRON Axis4

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the DATRON neo and the neo Entry?

Travels and work envelope are shared. The neo has a 2.0 kW (2.7 hp) spindle at 40,000 rpm, 24 tool stations, feed up to 28 m/min (1,102 ipm) and the DATRON next control, with the DATRON Axis4 as an option. The neo Entry has a 1.0 kW (1.3 hp) spindle at 27,000 rpm, 12 stations, feed up to 12 m/min (472 ipm), 3 axes with no rotary option listed, and DATRON next Entry, which takes no additional software options.

02 How big a part fits in the DATRON neo?

The work envelope is 500 mm x 400 mm x 175 mm (19.7 in x 15.7 in x 6.9 in). The 175 mm is the portal passage, so it covers the part and its clamping together. The axes travel 520 mm (20.5 in) in X, 420 mm (16.5 in) in Y and 220 mm (8.7 in) in Z.

03 What tooling does the DATRON neo use?

Tools are clamped by direct shank in a 2.0 kW (2.7 hp) HF spindle; the table lists no HSK or other holder interface for this model. The tool-holding fixture has 24 stations and a tool length probe, so tools are measured on the machine after loading.

04 How much space does the DATRON neo take up?

Without the operating terminal it measures 805 mm x 1,450 mm x 1,900 mm (31.7 in x 57.1 in x 74.8 in). With the terminal the width grows to 1,320 mm (52.0 in). It weighs approximately 740 kg (1,631 lb). The table gives no electrical or compressed-air requirement, so ask for those before choosing a location.

05 Can a fourth axis be added to the DATRON neo?

Yes. DATRON lists the Axis4 as an option, which makes the 3-axis machine a 3+1 configuration. A 3+2 setup is not listed for this model; the M8Cube is the smallest machine here that lists Axis5 as well.
