The Makino V99 (50 Taper) is the heavy-duty variant of Makino's flagship large-capacity vertical machining center, built for die and mold manufacturers who prioritize maximum rigidity and torque for aggressive roughing operations in large workpieces. Where the 40-taper version balances speed and rigidity for finishing, the 50T leans hard into metal removal capability.
Axis travel remains the same as the 40T at 1,000 x 800 x 500 mm (39.4 x 31.5 x 19.7 in) on X/Y/Z, and the 1,100 x 800 mm (43.3 x 31.5 in) worktable still handles up to 2,000 kg (4,409 lb). The key difference is the BBT 50 (Big Plus) spindle, which tops out at 10,000 RPM but delivers substantially more torque than the 40-taper variant — 30 kW (40 hp) of continuous power through a larger-diameter spindle assembly. This makes the 50T significantly more productive when hogging material out of large forging dies, stamping dies, and deep mold cavities in hardened steels.
The machine uses the same rigid cast-iron construction and roller-type linear guides as the 40T, providing the structural foundation for heavy cutting without sacrificing positioning accuracy. Rapid traverse runs at 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) on X/Y and 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on Z. Choose the 40T if your work is primarily mold finishing, complex 3D contouring, or you need the higher RPM ceiling (14,000 vs 10,000) for semi-finish and finish passes. Choose the 50T if you regularly rough large die blocks, need maximum torque for heavy cuts in hardened steels, or your tooling is already standardized on BT50/BBT50. The V99 offers comparable travel to many mid-size double-column machines in a C-frame configuration. Double-column machines like the Makino MCF series or Okuma MCR-BII provide greater rigidity for extremely heavy cuts due to their symmetrical structure. The V99 trades some of that ultimate rigidity for better operator access and a smaller footprint. For most die/mold roughing applications, the V99's rigidity is sufficient, and the C-frame design makes workpiece loading easier.

Big Plus (BBT) is a dual-contact spindle interface where both the taper and the spindle face make contact simultaneously, unlike standard BT tooling where only the taper contacts.
