Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Hartford SMC-5 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Hartford SMC-5 is a 30-taper drilling and tapping center with a direct-drive spindle, 500 mm (19.7 in) of X travel, 400 mm (15.7 in) of Y and 300 mm (11.8 in) of Z. Hartford files it under special machining models and describes it as a solution for high-speed drilling and rigid tapping.
Speed is the whole argument. Rapid traverse is 50 m/min, acceleration is 1.4G in X and Y and 1.2G in Z, and the servo-driven, arm-less tool changer swaps tools in 1.5 seconds with its 14-tool magazine. The BT30 spindle is listed in direct-drive (DDS) versions of 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 / 24,000 rpm, and Hartford mentions an optional 12,000 / 20,000 rpm low-inertia spindle motor that shortens acceleration and deceleration.
The table is 600 x 400 mm (23.6 x 15.7 in) and takes an average load of 250 kg (551 lb). With 300 mm (11.8 in) of Z there is little height to spare, so this is a machine for flat or small prismatic parts, not for tall fixtures.
Chips leave at the rear. Hartford says the rear chip removal design cuts the footprint by about 23% compared with front-chip models when machines stand in a line, which is how drill-tap centers are usually installed. The base is an 850 mm wide-span Meehanite casting with a low centre of gravity, and X/Y way covers are integrated metal covers.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Rapid traverse speed of 50 m/min with 1.4G acceleration in X and Y
- Tool change time of 1.5 seconds with the 14-tool arm-less changer
- Direct-drive BT30 spindle listed up to 24,000 rpm
- Rear chip removal reduces line footprint by about 23%, per Hartford
- 850 mm wide-span, low-CG Meehanite base
Limitations
- Z travel is only 300 mm (11.8 in)
- Table load is 250 kg (551 lb)
- The magazine holds 14 tools; the 21-tool option is listed for the SMC-7
- The motor row reads 5.5 / 7.5 opt. 2.2 / 3.7 kW on a Cont. / 15 min basis, which differs from the SMC-7's row and should be confirmed

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Hartford gives a rapid traverse speed of 50 m/min and acceleration of 1.4G on the X-axis, 1.4G on the Y-axis and 1.2G on the Z-axis. The arm-less, servo-driven tool changer needs 1.5 seconds with the 14-tool magazine.
02
A direct-drive spindle with a #30 nose and BT30 shanks. The DDS row lists 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 / 24,000 rpm. Hartford also describes an optional 12,000 / 20,000 rpm low-inertia spindle motor for faster acceleration and deceleration.
03
Travels are 500 mm (19.7 in) in X, 400 mm (15.7 in) in Y and 300 mm (11.8 in) in Z over a 600 x 400 mm (23.6 x 15.7 in) table. The average table load is 250 kg (551 lb).
04
The SMC-7 is longer: 700 mm (27.6 in) of X travel and an 850 x 400 mm (33.5 x 15.7 in) table, with a 14 or 21 tool magazine. Y, Z, table load and the spindle speed list are the same as on the SMC-5.
