Overview

A full 800 mm cube of Y and Z travel behind 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of X: the AWEA BM-1600 MAX is a 50-taper box-way vertical machining center for die blocks and heavy fabricated parts. The table is 1,700 x 800 mm (66.9 x 31.5 in) and carries 2,000 kg (4,409 lb), the first two-tonne rating in the BM range.

Headroom is generous. The spindle nose travels from 200 to 1,000 mm (7.9 ~ 39.4 in) above the table, so a tall block still leaves room for a long boring bar inside the 250 mm (9.8 in) tool length limit. The Z stroke of 800 mm (31.5 in) compares with 700 mm (27.6 in) on the BM-1400 MAX.

AWEA also builds a linear-guide machine with identical travels, the AF-1600MAX. Put side by side, the two show what the BM pays and gains. The AF-1600MAX has a direct-drive 12,000 rpm spindle, 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) rapids and a 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) table. The BM-1600 MAX has a 6,000 rpm gear spindle in BT50, 20 m/min (787 ipm) rapids and the heavier table rating. Weights are close, 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) here against 16,000 kg (35,273 lb) for the AF-1600MAX.

The gear spindle's motor is 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp). Cutting feed runs 1 - 12 m/min (39 - 472 ipm). Three screw type chip augers are fitted on this size, with a chain type conveyor as an option, and the machine asks for 35 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) table load on a 1,700 x 800 mm (66.9 x 31.5 in) table
  • 800 mm (31.5 in) of travel in both Y and Z, with up to 1,000 mm under the spindle nose
  • BT50 gear spindle at 6,000 rpm with a two-step gear box
  • Box ways on three axes for heavy-duty cutting
  • Tools up to 15 kg (33 lb) and Ø210 mm with adjacent pockets empty

Limitations

  • 20 m/min (787 ipm) rapids, against 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on the AF-1600MAX
  • Spindle speed limited to 6,000 rpm
  • Standard magazine holds 24 tools
  • Spindle motor is 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp); the BM-2100 MAX has 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Should I choose the AWEA BM-1600 MAX or the AF-1600MAX?

Travels are the same on both. The BM-1600 MAX is the heavy-cutting choice: box ways, a BT50 gear spindle at 6,000 rpm, a 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) table and 15 kg (33 lb) tools. The AF-1600MAX is the faster one: linear guideways, a 12,000 rpm direct-drive spindle, 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) rapids and a 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) table.

02 What is the work envelope of the BM-1600 MAX?

X travel is 1,600 mm (63.0 in), Y travel 800 mm (31.5 in) and Z travel 800 mm (31.5 in). The table measures 1,700 x 800 mm (66.9 x 31.5 in), and the spindle nose to table top distance is 200 ~ 1,000 mm (7.9 ~ 39.4 in).

03 How fast does the BM-1600 MAX move?

Rapid feed is 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X and Y and 18 m/min (709 ipm) in Z. Cutting feed is 1 - 12 m/min (39 - 472 ipm). These are box-way figures: lower than a linear-guide machine, in exchange for the damping of sliding ways.

04 What does the BM-1600 MAX weigh and what supply does it need?

Machine weight is 15,000 kg (33,069 lb). AWEA lists a 35 kVA power requirement and 6 kg/cm² of pneumatic pressure. The coolant tank holds 570 liter. The control is the FANUC Oi -MF Plus.
