Overview

The Johnford VMC-1300-2H is a twin-spindle vertical machining center: two BT-40 / CAT-40 spindles set 635 mm (25 in) apart over one 1,500 x 750 mm (59.1 x 29.5 in) table, each served by its own 24-tool armless changer. Johnford writes the tool capacity as Armless 24x2. Travels are 1,300 x 850 x 710 mm (51.2 x 33.5 x 28 in).

The idea is simple. Two identical parts are fixtured 635 mm apart and cut in the same program, so each cycle yields two pieces. That only pays when the parts are identical, fit within half the table each, and run in volume. The fixed spindle spacing also sets the largest part that can be machined in pairs, so fixture design starts from that 635 mm figure.

Both spindles run 80-8,000 rpm through an automatic Hi-Lo gearbox. The spindle motor row gives 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), compared with 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) on the single-spindle VMC-1300. Table load is 3,270 kg (7,194 lb), and the machine weighs 14,000 kg (30,800 lb). Rapids are 18 / 18 / 12 m/min (709 / 709 / 472 ipm) on Φ50 ball screws.

Compared with the VMC-1300, Z travel is shorter, 710 mm (28 in) against 800 mm (31.5 in), and the spindle nose range is 160~870 mm (6.3~34.3 in). No arm type changer is listed for this model. The Large VMC option list names Fanuc 31i-MB PLUS and Siemens SINUMERIK ONE control systems, but the page does not say which control the 2H is supplied with, so confirm that with Johnford.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two 40-taper spindles 635 mm (25 in) apart machine two identical parts per cycle
  • Each spindle has its own 24-tool armless changer (Armless 24x2)
  • Automatic Hi-Lo gearbox with an 80-8,000 rpm range
  • 3,270 kg (7,194 lb) table load on a 1,500 x 750 mm (59.1 x 29.5 in) table
  • 14,000 kg (30,800 lb) machine weight

Limitations

  • Spindle spacing is fixed at 635 mm (25 in), which caps the size of parts run in pairs
  • Z travel is 710 mm (28 in), less than the 800 mm (31.5 in) of the single-spindle VMC-1300
  • No arm type tool changer option is printed for this model
  • Only suits repeat production of identical parts; one-off work uses one spindle
06

Best For

Volume production of identical parts machined two at a time Paired left-hand and right-hand fixtures within 635 mm (25 in) spindle spacing Medium-size steel and cast iron parts that need gearbox torque at 40 taper

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does 2H mean on the Johnford VMC-1300-2H?

It is the twin-spindle version of the VMC-1300. The table lists a distance between two spindles of 635 mm (25 in) and a tool capacity of Armless 24x2, one 24-tool armless changer per spindle.

02 How far apart are the two spindles?

635 mm (25 in). X travel is 1,300 mm (51.2 in) and the table is 1,500 x 750 mm (59.1 x 29.5 in), so two fixtures sit side by side along X at that pitch.

03 What are the spindle ratings of the VMC-1300-2H?

BT-40 / CAT-40 taper, 80-8,000 rpm through an Auto Hi-Lo Gear, with a spindle diameter of 70 mm (2.8 in). The spindle motor row reads 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp).

04 How does the VMC-1300-2H differ from the VMC-1300?

The VMC-1300 has one spindle with a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) motor, 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel and a weight of 13,500 kg (29,700 lb). The 2H has two spindles, 710 mm (28 in) of Z and weighs 14,000 kg (30,800 lb). Table size, X and Y travel and table load are the same.
