Matec VMC — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Matec VMC that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Matec or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

The Matec VMC is a 3-axis vertical machining centre that MATEC builds in five sizes, identified in its table only by their X travel: 860, 1,170, 1,350, 1,676 and 2,000 mm (33.9, 46.1, 53.1, 66.0 and 78.7 in). Every row on this page that shows five figures lists them in that order. Y travel runs from 600 mm (23.6 in) on the smallest machine to 1,000 mm (39.4 in) on the largest, and Z from 600 mm (23.6 in) to 800 mm (31.5 in).

The spindle is the same across the range. The standard motor spindle takes HSK63 or SK40 tooling and runs to 8,000 rpm, with 14 kW (18.8 hp) and 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) at the short-duty rating and 11 kW (14.8 hp) and 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) continuous. MATEC lists 10,000, 12,000 and 15,000 rpm versions, and a 2-speed gearbox that delivers 365 Nm (269 lb-ft) at 8,000 rpm as an option. That gearbox is the one to ask about for steel roughing, since 130 Nm is modest for the two largest tables.

What changes with size is everything around the spindle. The table grows from 910 x 560 mm on the smallest machine to 2,100 x 1,000 mm on the largest, and weight from 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) to 20,000 kg (44,092 lb). Rapids fall as the castings get heavier: 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) in the three smaller sizes, 24 m/min (945 ipm) on the X 1,676 and 20 m/min (787 ipm) on the X 2,000. A hydraulic Z counterbalance is standard from X = 1,600 mm onwards.

The tool changer is a disc magazine with a dual gripper holding 24 tools as standard; tools can be 300 mm (11.8 in) long, 75 mm (3.0 in) in diameter and 7 kg (15 lb). The standard control is a HEIDENHAIN TNC 640 HSCI, with SINUMERIK 828D sl as the alternative. MATEC also lists a VMC B, a heavier-spindle version with HSK100 or SK50 tooling.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Five sizes on one design, from 860 mm (33.9 in) to 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of X travel
  • Optional 2-speed gearbox raises spindle torque to 365 Nm (269 lb-ft) at 8,000 rpm
  • Roller linear guides in X, Y and Z and a grey cast base, column and table, per MATEC's description
  • Preparation for a 4th axis is standard equipment, and MATEC lists CNC rotary tables of Ø 240 or 350 mm
  • Rapid traverse of 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) in X and Y on the three smaller sizes

Limitations

  • Standard spindle torque is 130 Nm (96 lb-ft), light for the 2,100 x 1,000 mm table of the largest size unless the gearbox is ordered
  • The standard magazine holds 24 tools; the larger magazines of 30 to 40 pockets are extensions
  • Tools are limited to 75 mm (3.0 in) in diameter and 7 kg (15 lb) on the HSK63 | SK40 spindle
  • Rapids drop to 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X and Y and 15 m/min (591 ipm) in Z on the X 2,000 size
  • A chip conveyor and through-tool coolant at 30 or 70 bar are options; the standard machine has a chip tray

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What sizes does the Matec VMC come in?

MATEC's table shows five columns under VMC, named only by travel. X is 860, 1,170, 1,350, 1,676 or 2,000 mm; Y is 600, 700, 700, 760 or 1,000 mm; Z is 600, 650, 640, 720 or 800 mm. The matching tables measure 910 x 560, 1,160 x 700, 1,350 x 700, 1,700 x 760 and 2,100 x 1,000 mm.

02 What spindle does the Matec VMC have?

The standard motor spindle takes HSK63 or SK40 holders and runs to 8,000 rpm with 14 kW (18.8 hp) and 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) at the short-duty rating, 11 kW (14.8 hp) and 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) continuous. Spindles of 10,000, 12,000 and 15,000 rpm are listed as alternatives, and a 2-speed gearbox with 365 Nm (269 lb-ft) at 8,000 rpm is optional.

03 How heavy is the machine and how much floor space does it need?

It depends on the size. The smallest machine weighs 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) and measures 2,960 x 3,570 x 3,110 mm in length, width and height. The largest weighs 20,000 kg (44,092 lb) and measures 5,440 x 4,750 x 3,470 mm. The three sizes between them weigh 7,300, 7,400 and 11,000 kg.

04 Which control is fitted to the Matec VMC?

The standard equipment list names the HEIDENHAIN TNC 640 HSCI. SINUMERIK 828D sl is listed under further options. Preparation for a 4th axis, without the power module, is part of the standard equipment, so a rotary table can be added later.

05 What is the difference between the VMC and the VMC B?

The VMC B carries a larger spindle: HSK100 or SK50 tooling, 6,000 rpm as standard, 18.5 kW (24.8 hp) and 160 Nm (118 lb-ft) at the short-duty rating. On the VMC B, tools can be 350 mm (13.8 in) long and 15 kg (33 lb), against 300 mm (11.8 in) and 7 kg (15 lb) on the VMC.
