Overview
The Brother TC-20A is a compact column-traverse tapping center that preceded the TC-20B, establishing the ultra-compact high-speed drilling and tapping platform that Brother would develop through multiple generations. With X/Y/Z travels of 300 x 200 x 200 mm (11.8 x 7.9 x 7.9 in) and a BT30 spindle running at 8,000 RPM, the TC-20A was designed for high-speed drilling, tapping, and light milling of small precision components.
The column-traverse design moves the spindle column rather than the table in the X-axis, reducing moving mass and enabling faster acceleration for point-to-point rapid moves between hole positions. This architectural choice makes the TC-20A exceptionally fast on parts with many drilled and tapped features, where repositioning speed between operations dominates cycle time.
The TC-20A uses a 16-tool automatic tool changer and the Brother NC-A00 control, an earlier generation of Brother's proprietary CNC platform. The machine weight of approximately 850 kg and footprint under 1 square meter make it one of the most compact capable CNC machining centers ever produced. No special foundation is required, and the machine can be installed on any standard shop floor.
As a legacy model, the TC-20A is available exclusively on the used market. Prices range from $8,000 to $25,000 depending on condition, hours, and included accessories. The machine remains practical for shops needing a dedicated small-part drilling and tapping station where the low acquisition cost and minimal floor space requirements are compelling advantages.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Extremely compact footprint under 1 square meter for the densest possible shop floor utilization
- Column-traverse design reduces moving mass for fast acceleration between drill positions
- Very low acquisition cost on the used market makes it accessible to any shop budget
- Light machine weight requires no special foundation or floor preparation
- Simple, reliable mechanical design with low maintenance requirements over long service life
- Ideal dedicated tapping station that keeps larger machines free for milling work
Limitations
- Legacy NC-A00 control lacks Ethernet, probing, and modern programming features
- 8,000 RPM spindle is slower than later TC models (10,000+ RPM) and Speedio (16,000+ RPM)
- 1.5 kW spindle motor is very limited for any milling beyond light aluminum finishing
- No longer manufactured — spare parts availability is increasingly limited

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The TC-20A is available used only, typically $8,000-$25,000 depending on condition, hours, and control version. Well-maintained units with low hours command the higher end of that range.
02
The TC-20B upgraded the spindle to 10,000 RPM (from 8,000), improved the control to CNC-B00, and added optional 30,000 RPM high-speed spindle capability. The basic column-traverse architecture and compact footprint remain the same.
03
Yes, for simple drilling and tapping of small parts in aluminum and non-ferrous materials. The machine is reliable and fast on hole-pattern-intensive parts. It is not suitable for complex milling or harder materials due to limited spindle power.
04
The TC-20A uses the Brother NC-A00 control, an older proprietary platform. It accepts standard G-code but lacks modern features like Ethernet connectivity, touch probing, and conversational programming found on the CNC-B00 and CNC-C00 controls.
