Overview

The Haas DC-4-40 Drill Center is the largest 40-taper drill center in the Haas lineup, offering 1,270 x 660 x 635 mm (50 x 26 x 25 in) of travel. That 50-inch X-travel covers full-length extrusions, large structural panels, and multi-part fixtures that no other DC model can handle, all while maintaining the high-speed drilling DNA and rear chip discharge that define the DC series.

The spindle delivers 11.2 kW (15 hp) at 10,000 RPM with 62 Nm (46 ft-lbf) of torque at 1,700 RPM through an inline direct-drive system on a CT/BT 40 taper. Optional 12,000 and 15,000 RPM spindle upgrades are available. High-speed rigid tapping runs at 5,000 RPM with 4x retract speed.

The table measures 1,524 x 610 mm (60 x 24 in) and supports up to 680 kg (1,500 lb). The 18+1 SMTC delivers 1.75-second tool-to-tool and 2.0-second chip-to-chip times. Rapids hit 61.0 m/min (2,400 ipm) on all axes, keeping non-cutting time minimal even across the large travel envelope.

Rear chip discharge is standard, which separates the DC-4-40 from a similarly sized VF-5 or VF-6. When running dedicated drilling and tapping on large parts in a production line, automatic chip evacuation keeps the work zone clean and the operator focused on loading rather than chip management.

At approximately $95,000-$125,000 configured, the DC-4-40 is the go-to machine for shops running high-volume drill-and-tap work on large parts. With 25 inches of Z-travel and 1,500 lb table capacity, it also handles deeper drilling operations and heavier fixtures than the smaller DC models. The trade-off is floor space and a dedicated-purpose format that won't match a VF-5 for general milling versatility.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,270 mm (50 in) X-travel is the largest in any Haas drill center, handling full-length extrusions and large structural parts
  • 40-taper spindle with 2,400 IPM rapids delivers high-speed drilling with strong tool rigidity across the full envelope
  • Rear chip discharge provides automatic chip evacuation that standard VMCs lack, critical for production drilling lines
  • 1,500 lb table load and 60 x 24 inch table support heavy fixtures and multi-part setups
  • 25 inches of Z-travel handles deeper drilling operations and taller workpieces than other DC models
  • Same NGC control and 40-taper tooling as VF-series for standardized shop floor programming

Limitations

  • 15 hp spindle is optimized for drilling, not heavy milling; for versatile cutting on this envelope, use a VF-5 or VF-6
  • Large footprint consumes significant floor space for a single-purpose drill center
  • 18+1 tool capacity may be limiting for complex jobs requiring many different drill and tap sizes
  • Dedicated drill center format sacrifices general milling versatility for chip evacuation advantage
05

Best For

High-volume drill-and-tap operations on large panels, extrusions, and structural components up to 50 inches Automotive chassis and frame component production with extensive hole patterns Production lines requiring 40-taper rigidity and automatic rear chip evacuation on large workpieces Aerospace panel and bracket production needing precision drilling across a wide envelope Multi-part fixture setups where the 60-inch table accommodates multiple smaller parts per cycle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas DC-4-40 cost?

Base price starts around $95,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, and spindle upgrade, configured price runs $110,000-$125,000.

02 What is the difference between the DC-4-40 and the DC-3-40?

The DC-4-40 extends X-travel from 1,016 mm to 1,270 mm (40 to 50 in) and adds 10 inches of Z-travel (635 vs 394 mm). Table size increases to 60 x 24 inches with 1,500 lb capacity. Same spindle and speed. Choose the DC-4-40 for the largest parts that need maximum travel.

03 Should I get a DC-4-40 or a VF-5?

The VF-5 has a larger spindle (20-30 hp depending on model) and more milling capability. The DC-4-40 adds rear chip discharge for dedicated drilling production lines. Choose the DC-4-40 for high-volume drilling with automatic chip evacuation; choose the VF-5 for mixed milling work.

04 Can the DC-4-40 handle milling work?

Light milling is possible with the 40-taper spindle, including face milling and shallow pocketing in aluminum. For significant milling or steel work, a VF-5 or VF-6 with more spindle power is the appropriate choice.
