Overview
The Brother SPEEDIO M140X1 is a compact 5-axis mill-turn center that combines milling and turning capability in one of the smallest production footprints available. As the first generation of the M140 platform (predecessor to the M140X2), the M140X1 integrates a 16,000 RPM BT30 milling spindle with a dedicated turning spindle, enabling complete mill-turn processing of small precision components in a single setup.
With X/Y/Z travels of 200 x 440 x 305 mm (7.9 x 17.3 x 12.0 in), the M140X1 targets small-part production in medical, electronics, watchmaking, and automotive industries. The A-axis tilts from +120 to -30 degrees using a backlashless roller gear drive for high positioning accuracy. The C-axis provides 360-degree continuous rotation for both 5-axis milling orientation and turning operations.
The integrated turning spindle delivers 2,000 RPM turning capability with 55 Nm of torque and 8.7 kW of power, enabling OD/ID turning, facing, grooving, and threading on small components. This eliminates the need to transfer parts between a milling machine and a lathe, reducing handling time, improving concentricity, and shrinking the required machine count and floor space.
Rapid traverse rates of 50 m/min (1,969 ipm) on all three linear axes and sub-second tool changes via the 21-tool turret ATC maintain the Speedio platform's hallmark speed. The CNC-C00 control manages both milling and turning modes seamlessly. New M140X1 machines priced between $130,000 and $180,000, with used units from 2013-2019 trading $55,000-$100,000.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Integrated mill-turn capability eliminates part transfers between milling and turning machines, improving accuracy and reducing handling time
- 50 m/min rapid traverse on all linear axes is among the fastest in the compact 5-axis mill-turn class
- 0.9-second chip-to-chip tool changes keep multi-operation cycles productive
- Backlashless roller gear drive on A-axis provides high positioning accuracy without a clamp mechanism
- Extremely compact footprint requires no special foundation and fits in tight production cells
- Proven X1 platform with large installed base and strong used market availability
Limitations
- 40 kg maximum table load severely limits workpiece size — strictly a small-parts machine
- BT30 spindle taper limits cutting force for heavy roughing in steel and titanium
- 200 mm X-axis travel is very compact, restricting workpiece size to approximately 150 mm in X including fixturing
- X1 generation servo dynamics and control software are older than the current M140X2

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New M140X1 machines priced between $130,000 and $180,000. Used units from 2013-2019 trade $55,000-$100,000. The M140X1 offers savings over the newer M140X2 ($150K-$200K) while providing the same core mill-turn architecture.
02
The M140X2 is the second-generation successor with improved servo dynamics, refined thermal compensation, and updated control software. Mechanical specifications are very similar. The M140X1 provides excellent value on the used market.
03
Yes. The M140X1 has a dedicated turning spindle rated at 2,000 RPM and 55 Nm of torque, enabling OD/ID turning, facing, grooving, and threading — not just rotary indexing.
04
The M140X1 excels in aluminum, brass, copper, plastics, and mild steel for small parts. The BT30 taper and 40 kg table load limit heavy cutting in harder materials. For small titanium medical implants, it works with appropriate tooling and conservative parameters.
