Overview

The Hartford MW-433 is a double-column machining center with a moving crossbeam. Besides X travel of 4,000 mm (157.5 in), Y of 3,300 mm (129.9 in) and Z of 1,000 mm, it has a W axis: the whole crossbeam rises and falls 1,200 mm, or 1,500 mm or 1,800 mm as options.

A W axis solves the main weakness of a fixed bridge. On a fixed crossbeam the ram must extend a long way to reach a low part, and a long ram is a flexible one. Lowering the beam instead keeps the ram short over a flat plate and still leaves height for a tall casting when the beam is raised. Hartford drives the beam with twin ballscrews and twin servo motors and gives its positioning accuracy as 0.03 mm, with positioning allowed anywhere in the stroke.

The spindle is #50, either Hartford's gear head at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm or a hybrid spindle at 10,000 rpm, on an 18.5 / 22 kW motor with 30 / 35 kW optional (Cont. / 30 min). The ram runs on four linear guideways.

Automatic heads extend the machine to five faces: a universal head, a 90 degree head and an extension head are named, changed by a hydraulic head changer from a covered head magazine. The table is 4,000 x 2,200 mm (157.5 x 86.6 in) for 12,000 kg (26,455 lb), and the tool magazine holds 32 tools, or 40 or 62.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Moving crossbeam (W axis) of 1,200 mm, optionally 1,500 or 1,800 mm, on twin ballscrews
  • Automatic universal, 90 degree and extension heads with a head magazine
  • Y travel of 3,300 mm (129.9 in) over a 2,200 mm wide table
  • #50 gear spindle at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm or hybrid spindle at 10,000 rpm
  • Z ram on four linear guideways

Limitations

  • Smallest MW table: 4,000 x 2,200 mm (157.5 x 86.6 in) with a 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) load
  • W-axis positioning accuracy is stated as 0.03 mm, coarser than a linear axis
  • Angular heads index in 1 degree steps on A/C, per Hartford, so they are for positional work
  • Only two motor ratings are listed

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the W axis on the Hartford MW-433?

The vertical travel of the crossbeam. It is 1,200 mm as listed, with 1,500 mm or 1,800 mm as options, and is driven by twin ballscrews and twin servo motors. Hartford states a positioning accuracy of 0.03 mm for it.

02 What are the X, Y and Z travels of the MW-433?

X 4,000 mm (157.5 in), Y 3,300 mm (129.9 in) and Z 1,000 mm, with 1,200 mm optional. The table is 4,000 x 2,200 mm (157.5 x 86.6 in) and carries 12,000 kg (26,455 lb).

03 Which heads can the MW-433 use?

Hartford lists an auto universal head, a 90 degree head and an extension head. The full automatic head changer has a protective cover and an independent head magazine, and a hydraulic cylinder performs the changeover. A/C axis indexing is 1 degree.

04 What spindles are offered on the MW-433?

A #50 gear spindle at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm and a #50 hybrid spindle at 10,000 rpm. The motor is 18.5 / 22 kW, with 30 / 35 kW as the option (Cont. / 30 min).
