Overview

The PAMA Vertiram GT is a travelling gantry vertical machining center, and the largest machine PAMA lists. Clearance between the columns is 3,100 - 10,100 mm and clearance under the ram face 2,350 - 6,000 mm. The gantry travels 5,000 mm on X plus any number of 1,000 mm extensions, over floor plates 2,000 - 9,000 mm wide.

Nothing on the machine carries the workpiece, which is why the load figures are so high. Parts stand on the floor plates or on a turning table set into the foundation. The turning table is listed at Ø1,250 - Ø8,000 mm with a load capacity of up to 300,000 kg and a turning speed of up to 350 rpm, the top speed presumably applying to the smaller diameters.

Y travel of the headstock is 4,100 - 11,600 mm and the ram strokes 1,500 - 4,000 mm on Z. A moving crossrail is optional and adds a V axis of 1,100 - 3,600 mm, so the beam can be lowered to keep the ram short on low parts.

The ram can be equipped in three ways. With a driver for attachment heads it has 66 - 82 kW and 1,175 - 2,494 Nm at 4,000 - 6,000 rpm. With an integrated C axis, the transmission is Direct Drive or a gearbox with 4 ranges, and torque goes up to 10,730 Nm with power up to 103 kW. With a boring bar of 130 - 160 mm and 800 mm (31.5 in) of W stroke, it gives 78 - 82 kW and 1,743 - 2,494 Nm.

Rapid feed is up to 30,000 mm/min on X, Y, Z and W, and up to 4,000 mm/min on V. Depending on size, PAMA fits roller guideways or preloaded hydrostatic guideways. The control is Siemens, Heidenhain or Fanuc.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Up to 10,100 mm between the columns and up to 6,000 mm under the ram face
  • Turning table up to Ø8,000 mm with a load capacity up to 300,000 kg
  • Integrated C axis ram with a gearbox option delivering up to 10,730 Nm
  • Optional moving crossrail with a V axis of 1,100 - 3,600 mm
  • Boring bar ram available: 130 - 160 mm spindle with 800 mm (31.5 in) of W

Limitations

  • V axis rapid feed is up to 4,000 mm/min, so the crossrail is a positioning axis
  • The moving crossrail is an option
  • Linear rapids of up to 30,000 mm/min are lower than the 40,000 mm/min of the Vertiram TT
  • A machine of this size needs a dedicated foundation with floor plates

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large is the working area of the Vertiram GT?

Clearance between columns is 3,100 - 10,100 mm and clearance under the ram face 2,350 - 6,000 mm. X travel of the gantry is 5,000 mm plus 1,000 mm steps, Y travel 4,100 - 11,600 mm and ram travel 1,500 - 4,000 mm. Floor plates are 2,000 - 9,000 mm wide.

02 Can the Vertiram GT do turning?

Yes. The technical sheet lists a turning table of Ø1,250 - Ø8,000 mm with a load capacity up to 300,000 kg and a turning speed up to 350 rpm. PAMA says the machine can be configured with a wide assortment of milling or turning tables.

03 What ram and spindle options does the Vertiram GT have?

A ram with driver: Direct Drive, 66 - 82 kW, 1,175 - 2,494 Nm, 4,000 - 6,000 rpm. A ram with integrated C axis: Direct Drive / 4 ranges, 66 - 103 kW, 1,175 - 10,730 Nm, 4,000 - 6,000 rpm. A ram with boring bar: 130 - 160 mm, 78 - 82 kW, 1,743 - 2,494 Nm, 4,000 - 5,000 rpm.

04 What is the V axis on the Vertiram GT?

It is the vertical travel of the crossrail, offered as an option, with a stroke of 1,100 - 3,600 mm and a rapid feed of up to 4,000 mm/min. PAMA's stated purpose is to adapt the spindle height to the workpiece being machined.
