Overview
At 3,810 x 813 x 762 mm (150 x 32 x 30 in), the Haas VM-12 has the longest X-travel of any vertical machining centre Haas builds. One hundred and fifty inches is twelve and a half feet of table, and it puts this machine into work that normally requires a bridge mill or a floor-type boring machine.
The format is unusual. Most builders stop the VMC configuration well short of this length because the column and rail deflection becomes hard to manage. Haas handles it with mass, 16,466 kg of it, and by keeping Y-travel to 32 inches so the cross-rail stays short. That's the design trade: exceptional length, ordinary width.
US$421,995 buys the machine. What it replaces is more interesting than what it competes with. Long structural dies, extrusion tooling, machine bases, and weldment fixtures that currently get done in two setups on a 100-inch machine, or subcontracted to a shop with a bridge mill, come back in-house on a VM-12.
The caveats are consistent with the rest of the range and worth repeating at this size. 360 ipm rapids across 150 inches means roughly 25 seconds for a full traverse. The 30 hp spindle is unchanged from machines a third the size. And chip evacuation over twelve feet of table needs planning, because the conveyor and washdown have a lot of ground to cover.
