Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Johnford VMC-850 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Johnford VMC-850 is the shorter of the two machines in Johnford's small VMC series: a 40-taper vertical machining center with 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel, 500 mm (19.7 in) of Y and 610 mm (24 in) of Z over a 1,000 x 500 mm (39.4 x 19.7 in) table. The spindle runs from 60~8,000 rpm on a 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp) motor, and the machine weighs 5,500 kg (12,100 lb).
Those figures describe a general-purpose machine for steel and cast iron rather than a high-speed one. Johnford quotes its cutting capacity in S45C as 120 cc/min milling, Ø30 mm (Ø1.2 in) drilling and M30 x P3.5 tapping, which is a useful way to judge whether the motor is enough for the job. What limits the VMC-850 most is the table load: 400 kg (880 lb). A vise, a fixture plate and a steel block add up quickly against that number, so weigh the setup before quoting heavy work on it.
The standard spindle is belt-driven by what Johnford calls a P motor. A two-speed Hi-Lo gearbox with the same 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp) rating is an option, as are a direct drive spindle at 10,000 or 12,000 rpm and a motor spindle at 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm. Taper is BT-40 or CAT-40, with BBT-40 and HSK A63 listed as options.
The standard accessory list names a 24-tool armless ATC and a Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS control with a 10.4 in LCD and Manual Guide i. Arm type changers with 24 or 32 tools are optional. The VMC-1050 is the same machine with 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of X travel, so the choice between the two comes down to part length and floor space: this one is 2,350 x 2,200 x 2,698 mm (92.5 x 86.6 x 106.2 in).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Z travel of 610 mm (24 in) is generous for a machine with 800 mm (31.5 in) of X, leaving room for tall fixtures or a 4th-axis table
- Rapids of 30 / 30 / 20 m/min (1,181 / 1,181 / 787 ipm) with a cutting feed range of 1~12,000 mm/min
- Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS with a 10.4 in LCD and Manual Guide i is on the standard accessory list
- Spindle can be ordered with a Hi-Lo gearbox, as a 10,000 or 12,000 rpm direct drive unit, or as a motor spindle up to 20,000 rpm
- Compact at 2,350 x 2,200 x 2,698 mm (92.5 x 86.6 x 106.2 in) and 5,500 kg (12,100 lb)
Limitations
- Table load is only 400 kg (880 lb), which rules out heavy fixtures and large steel blocks
- The standard spindle stops at 8,000 rpm with 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp); more speed is an extra-cost spindle
- With adjacent pockets full, tools are limited to 75 mm (3 in) in diameter and 10 kg (22 lb)
- Coolant through the spindle, linear scales and the spindle oil cooler are all on the optional list

Frequently Asked Questions
01
X is 800 mm (31.5 in), Y is 500 mm (19.7 in) and Z is 610 mm (24 in). The table measures 1,000 x 500 mm (39.4 x 19.7 in) and the distance from spindle nose to table runs from 100~710 mm (3.94~28 in).
02
Johnford lists a table load capacity of 400 kg (880 lb). That figure has to cover the vise or fixture, any rotary table and the workpiece together, so it is the first number to check for steel parts.
03
Standard is 60~8,000 rpm with a 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp) P motor. Options are an auto 2-speed gearbox on the standard spindle, a direct drive spindle at 10,000 or 12,000 rpm, and a motor spindle at max. 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm. An oil cooler for the spindle and a thermal compensation system are optional too.
04
The standard accessory list names Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS with a 10.4 in LCD and Manual Guide i. Siemens SINUMERIK 828D with a 10.4 in LCD is listed as an option.
05
Only in length. The VMC-1050 has 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of X travel on a 1,200 x 500 mm (47.2 x 19.7 in) table and weighs 6,000 kg (13,200 lb). Y and Z travel, spindle, tool changer and the 400 kg (880 lb) table load are the same on both.
