How much does the Tormach PCNC 440 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Tormach PCNC 440 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Tormach PCNC 440 is the smallest mill Tormach makes: 10 in (254 mm) of X travel, 6.25 in (158.75 mm) of Y and 10 in (254 mm) of Z, on a typical footprint of 42 in × 36 in (1,067 mm × 914 mm). Its R8 spindle is rated 0.75 hp (0.56 kW) and reaches 10,000 rpm.
It is still built the way the larger machines are. Tormach lists a cast iron frame and table, dovetail ways and ball screws, and the mill runs the PathPilot control with conversational programming. What shrinks is everything the part touches. The table is 18 in × 6.30 in (458 mm × 160 mm) and carries 150 lb (68 kg). Clearance from spindle nose to table peaks at 12 in (305 mm), and the spindle centerline is 6.5 in (165 mm) from the column.
Three-quarters of a horsepower defines the cutting. With 10,000 rpm on hand the machine suits small end mills in aluminium and plastics. Tormach also names stainless steel and titanium, which at this power means very light cuts. Threads are made with a thread mill, the only entry in the tapping row, and Tormach notes that this model has a non-reversible spindle.
Installation is the easy part. The mill plugs into a single-phase 115 Vac outlet on a 15A breaker, a typical system weighs 600 lb (272 kg) and it stands 72 in (1,829 mm) high. Bought machine-only it is the base mill and controller with no stand; the stand, enclosure, power drawbar, probe and 8-pocket automatic tool changer belong to the packages. Tormach aims it at education, small manufacturers, hobbyists and beginners. For parts that outgrow it, the 770M offers 14 in (356 mm) of X travel and still runs on 115 Vac.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Typical footprint of 42 in × 36 in (1,067 mm × 914 mm) and a typical system weight of 600 lb (272 kg)
- Plugs into a single-phase 115 Vac outlet on a 15A breaker
- 10,000 rpm R8 spindle for small cutters
- Cast iron frame and table with dovetail ways and ball screws
- Runs the PathPilot control with conversational programming and support for up to four axis continuous machining
Limitations
- Spindle power is 0.75 hp (0.56 kW), half that of the 770M at 1.5 hp (1.12 kW)
- Maximum weight on the table is 150 lb (68 kg)
- Thread milling is the only listed threading method, and Tormach notes the spindle is non-reversible
- Y travel of 6.25 in (158.75 mm) and Z travel of 10 in (254 mm) rule out all but small parts

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Travels are 10 in (254 mm) in X, 6.25 in (158.75 mm) in Y and 10 in (254 mm) in Z. The table measures 18 in × 6.30 in (458 mm × 160 mm) and is rated for 150 lb (68 kg). Maximum clearance between spindle nose and table is 12 in (305 mm), which has to cover the vise, the part and the tool with its holder.
02
Single-phase 115 Vac, 50/60 Hz, on a 15A breaker. It is supplied with a NEMA 5-15P plug and requires a NEMA 5-15R receptacle, and Tormach's feature list says it plugs into any standard single-phase 120Vac outlet. No three-phase supply is involved.
03
The tapping row for this model lists thread mill only, and Tormach notes that the PCNC 440 has a non-reversible spindle. Rigid tapping is listed for the MX mills, and tension/compression and auto-reversing tapping for the 770M and 1100M. On this machine, plan to thread mill, or to tap by hand after machining.
04
Yes, in the top package. The package comparison lists an 8-pocket automatic tool changer, included only in the Premium package. The power drawbar, spindle probe and enclosure come in with the Equipped package. The machine-only configuration is the base mill with the PathPilot CNC controller, without a stand.
05
Both run on 115 Vac, reach 10,000 rpm on an R8 spindle and feed at 135 ipm (3.43 m/min) in X and Y. The 770M is the larger machine: 14 in (356 mm) of X travel against 10 in (254 mm), 1.5 hp (1.12 kW) against 0.75 hp (0.56 kW), and a 500 lb (227 kg) table rating against 150 lb (68 kg). A typical 770M system weighs 950 lb (431 kg), this one 600 lb (272 kg).
