Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Colchester Storm VL-1050 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Width is what the Colchester Storm VL-1050 adds to the Storm range. Y travel is 610 mm (24.0 in) and so is Z, on an X travel of 1,050 mm (41.3 in). The table measures 1,150 x 600 mm (45.3 x 23.6 in). It is the first VL model with a 600 mm deep table, and it changes what fits: square plates, die sets, mould bases and housings that the narrower tables cannot hold flat.
There is a catch in the load figure. The table is rated for 700 kg (1,543 lb). That is less than the 800 kg (1,764 lb) of the narrower Storm VL-1000 and well short of the 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) of the Storm VL-1200, which shares this machine's Y and Z. For aluminium tooling plates and medium steel blocks it is ample. For a large steel mould base with its clamping, check the weight first.
The working height is generous. Spindle nose to table distance is 150 - 760 mm (5.9 - 29.9 in), which with 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z leaves room for a vice on a riser or a tilting rotary table. Five 18 mm (0.7 in) T-slots cross the table.
Spindle and changer are standard VL equipment, meaning BT40, 10,000 rpm, 11 kW (14.8 hp) and a twin arm changer for 24 tools. The linear guideways suit the long air moves that wide plates involve.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 610 mm (24.0 in) of travel in both Y and Z
- 1,150 x 600 mm (45.3 x 23.6 in) table for square plates and mould bases
- Up to 760 mm (29.9 in) between spindle nose and table
- BT40 spindle at 10,000 rpm with a 24-tool changer
Limitations
- Table load of 700 kg (1,543 lb) is lower than on the narrower Storm VL-1000
- The 1,150 mm (45.3 in) table is barely longer than the 1,050 mm (41.3 in) X travel, leaving little room outside the stroke
- 11 kW (14.8 hp) limits heavy roughing in steel

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Y-axis travel is 610 mm (24.0 in) and the table is 600 mm deep, at 1,150 x 600 mm (45.3 x 23.6 in). X-axis travel is 1,050 mm (41.3 in) and Z-axis travel 610 mm (24.0 in).
02
700 kg (1,543 lb). The Storm VL-1200 has the same Y and Z travels with a 1,300 x 600 mm (51.2 x 23.6 in) table rated for 1,200 kg (2,646 lb), so it is the model to consider when the work is heavy as well as wide.
03
Yes. The table lists a BT40 taper, 10,000 rpm and 11 kW (14.8 hp), with a twin arm automatic tool changer holding 24 tools. Through spindle coolant is optional.
04
Colchester lists a 4th and 5th axis rotary or tilting table among the optional features. The spindle nose to table distance of 150 - 760 mm (5.9 - 29.9 in) gives height for one, but its weight counts against the 700 kg (1,543 lb) table rating.
