Overview

Johnford's VMC-1050 stretches the small VMC series to 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of X travel on a 1,200 x 500 mm (47.2 x 19.7 in) table. Everything across and above the table matches its shorter sibling: Y travel is 500 mm (19.7 in), Z is 610 mm (24 in), and the spindle sits 550 mm (21.7 in) from the column.

Long and narrow is the right way to think about this envelope. The table is more than twice as long as it is deep, which suits bars, rails, plates and rows of vises along X. It does not suit square fixtures, and the 400 kg (880 lb) table load is unchanged from the VMC-850 even though the table is longer. A buyer who needs the length for one heavy part should look at that limit before anything else.

Power and speed are modest. The spindle turns 60~8,000 rpm with a 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp) motor, and three ball screws of Ø40 drive axes that rapid at 30 / 30 / 20 m/min (1,181 / 1,181 / 787 ipm). Johnford gives the S45C cutting capacity as 120 cc/min in milling. Faster spindles exist only as options: direct drive at 10,000 or 12,000 rpm, or a motor spindle at max. 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm.

Tool handling is the same as on the shorter machine. Maximum tool length is 320 mm (12.6 in), weight 10 kg (22 lb), and diameter 100 mm (4 in), or 75 mm (3 in) when the neighbouring pockets are occupied. The machine weighs 6,000 kg (13,200 lb) and needs 2,920 x 2,200 x 2,698 mm (115 x 86.6 x 106.2 in) of space.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of X travel on a 1,200 x 500 mm (47.2 x 19.7 in) table, in a machine only 2,200 mm deep
  • Standard accessories include a full enclosure with interlocks, chip flushing coolant and screw type chip conveyors
  • Tools up to 320 mm (12.6 in) long fit under 610 mm (24 in) of Z travel
  • A 4th-axis programmable rotary table and linear scales on X, Y and Z are available from the factory option list

Limitations

  • 400 kg (880 lb) table load on a 1,200 mm long table: long parts must also be light
  • Y travel is 500 mm (19.7 in), so wide plates need a different machine
  • S45C milling capacity is given as 120 cc/min, which reflects the 5.5 / 7.5 kW (7.4 / 10.1 hp) motor
  • Through-spindle coolant at 20 bar or 70 bar is optional, not standard
06

Best For

Long, light parts such as rails, bars and extrusions up to 1,050 mm (41.3 in) Several vises in a row along the X axis Second-operation and general milling with a 60~8,000 rpm spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long a part fits on the Johnford VMC-1050?

X travel is 1,050 mm (41.3 in) and the table working surface is 1,200 x 500 mm (47.2 x 19.7 in). Y travel is 500 mm (19.7 in). Whatever is loaded has to stay within the 400 kg (880 lb) table load capacity.

02 What size tools can the VMC-1050 changer take?

Maximum tool diameter is 100 mm (4 in), reduced to 75 mm (3 in) with tools in the adjacent pockets. Maximum tool length is 320 mm (12.6 in) and maximum tool weight 10 kg (22 lb). The standard list names a 24-tool armless ATC; arm type changers are optional.

03 Is the VMC-1050 heavier than the VMC-850?

Yes. The VMC-1050 weighs 6,000 kg (13,200 lb) against 5,500 kg (12,100 lb) for the VMC-850, and it is 2,920 mm long where the VMC-850 is 2,350 mm. Width and height are identical.

04 Can the VMC-1050 be ordered with a Siemens control?

Yes. Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS with a 10.4 in LCD and Manual Guide i is the standard control, and Siemens SINUMERIK 828D with a 10.4 in LCD appears on the optional accessory list.
