Overview

No AF machine is larger than the AWEA AF-1800MAX. This vertical machining center travels 1,800 mm (70.9 in) in X and 800 mm (31.5 in) in Y and Z, over a 1,900 x 800 mm (74.8 x 31.5 in) table that carries 1,800 kg (3,968 lb). At 18,000 kg (39,683 lb) it weighs more than four times the smallest machine in the range, the AF-650II at 4,200 kg (9,259 lb).

Beyond this size AWEA's catalogue moves to bridge type machines, so the AF-1800MAX marks the upper limit of what the maker builds as a C-frame. The practical advantage of staying with a C-frame is access: the table is open on three sides for crane loading, and the operator works close to the spindle.

The structure that makes the long Y stroke possible is shared with the other MAX models. Four linear guideways carry the saddle, and the bed is extended so the saddle stays supported across its travel. The column stands 903 mm (35.6 in) behind the spindle center.

Spindle and feed data do not scale with the frame. A direct-drive 12,000 rpm BT40 spindle with 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) is standard, BT50 is optional, and the axes rapid at 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) in X and Y and 24 m/min (945 ipm) in Z. For a machine this size the BT50 high torque gear spindle that AWEA describes for the series, 6,000 rpm with 382 Nm at 375 rpm, is worth asking about. The coolant tank holds 660 liter and the supply requirement is 40 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Largest AF envelope: 1,800 mm (70.9 in) in X with 800 mm (31.5 in) in Y and Z
  • Table load of 1,800 kg (3,968 lb) on a 1,900 x 800 mm (74.8 x 31.5 in) table
  • 18,000 kg (39,683 lb) of machine mass with a four-guideway saddle and extended bed
  • C-frame layout keeps the table open for loading long parts
  • BT50 option, and a 660 liter coolant tank

Limitations

  • Standard spindle motor is only 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) for a table that takes 1,800 kg
  • Tool changer is limited to 24 tools of at most 7 kg (15 lb) each
  • Cutting feed rate tops out at 12 m/min (472 ipm)
  • Positioning accuracy of 0.008 mm, against 0.006 mm on the AF-1000 and smaller

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the AWEA AF-1800MAX work envelope?

X travel is 1,800 mm (70.9 in), Y travel 800 mm (31.5 in) and Z travel 800 mm (31.5 in). The table is 1,900 x 800 mm (74.8 x 31.5 in). Spindle nose to table top distance is 160 ~ 960 mm (6.3 ~ 37.8 in), and the spindle center is 903 mm (35.6 in) from the column.

02 What is the maximum table load of the AF-1800MAX?

1,800 kg (3,968 lb), the highest in the AF series. The AF-1600MAX is rated for 1,500 kg (3,307 lb). The table has five T-slots, 18 mm wide and 150 mm apart, for clamping long fixtures.

03 Is the AF-1800MAX suited to heavy steel cutting?

The frame is: 18,000 kg (39,683 lb), four saddle guideways, an extended bed. The standard spindle is less so, a direct-drive 12,000 rpm BT40 unit with 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp). AWEA lists BT50 as an option and describes a 6,000 rpm BT50 gear spindle with a 15 kW motor and 382 Nm at 375 rpm for heavy cutting. Check with AWEA that it applies to this model.

04 What utilities does the AF-1800MAX require?

The listed power requirement is 40 kVA and the pneumatic pressure requirement is 6 kg/cm². The coolant tank holds 660 liter. With a machine weight of 18,000 kg (39,683 lb), the foundation and the route into the building need checking before delivery.
