Overview

With 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel on a frame that keeps the 510 mm (20.1 in) Y and Z strokes of the AF-650II, the AWEA AF-800II is the stretched version of the smallest AF-II vertical machining center. Its table grows to 860 x 510 mm (33.9 x 20.1 in). Everything else in AWEA's table is unchanged from the shorter machine, including the 500 kg (1,102 lb) table load.

That last point deserves attention. A longer table invites two vises or a longer fixture plate, yet the load rating has not grown with it. Add up workholding and parts before planning a multi-station setup. The machine itself weighs 5,000 kg (11,023 lb).

The spindle is a BT40 direct-drive unit, 12,000 rpm, with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor. Rapid traverse is 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) on X and Y and 32 m/min (1,260 ipm) on Z, and the cutting feed rate tops out at 15 m/min (591 ipm). Is there a reason to step up to the AF-1000 instead? The AF-1000 gives 1,020 mm (40.2 in) of X and 635 mm (25.0 in) of Z, but its X and Y rapids drop to 36 m/min (1,417 ipm). For small parts run in volume, the AF-800II is the quicker machine.

Accuracy figures are 0.006 mm for positioning and 0.005 mm for repeatability, both to ISO230-2. The 24-tool arm type changer takes tools up to 250 mm (9.8 in) long and 7 kg (15 lb). AWEA fits the FANUC Oi - MF PLUS control and lists 25 kVA and 6 kg/cm² of air as the services. Roller type linear guide ways are described for the series, with ball type guide ways selectable to suit the application.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel and an 860 x 510 mm (33.9 x 20.1 in) table without giving up the 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) X and Y rapids
  • 12,000 rpm direct-drive BT40 spindle with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor
  • ISO230-2 positioning accuracy of 0.006 mm and repeatability of 0.005 mm, tighter than the 0.008 mm and 0.006 mm listed from the AF-1060II upward
  • Runs on 25 kVA, the lowest power requirement in the AF-II range
  • Guide ways can be specified as roller type or ball type to match the work

Limitations

  • Table load stays at 500 kg (1,102 lb) although the table is longer than the AF-650II's
  • Y travel is 510 mm (20.1 in); wider parts need the AF-1060II with 650 mm (25.6 in)
  • Z travel of 510 mm (20.1 in) and a 100 ~ 610 mm (3.9 ~ 24.0 in) nose-to-table range limit tall fixtures
  • No BT50 option appears in AWEA's table for this model

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the work envelope of the AWEA AF-800II?

Travels are 800 mm (31.5 in) in X, 510 mm (20.1 in) in Y and 510 mm (20.1 in) in Z. The table measures 860 x 510 mm (33.9 x 20.1 in) and is rated for 500 kg (1,102 lb). The distance from spindle center to column is 552 mm (21.7 in), and from spindle nose to table top 100 ~ 610 mm (3.9 ~ 24.0 in).

02 Does the AF-800II carry more weight than the AF-650II?

No. Both are rated for 500 kg (1,102 lb) on the table. The AF-800II offers a longer table, 860 x 510 mm (33.9 x 20.1 in), and 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel, but the load capacity in AWEA's table is the same. The next rating up is 700 kg (1,543 lb) on the AF-1000.

03 How fast are the axes on the AF-800II?

Rapid feed is 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) for X and Y and 32 m/min (1,260 ipm) for Z. The maximum cutting feed rate is 15 m/min (591 ipm). AWEA describes FANUC αi absolute AC servo motors driving the ball screws directly on all three axes.

04 Which control and tool changer come with the AF-800II?

The control is the FANUC Oi - MF PLUS. Tool storage is a 24-tool arm type changer; tools may be 250 mm (9.8 in) long, 7 kg (15 lb) in weight and Ø75 mm in diameter, or Ø150 mm with empty adjacent pockets. A shortcut tool change function is standard according to AWEA.
