Overview

800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel is the figure that defines the AXA VPC 45. The gantry machining centre shares its SK 40 spindle drives and its X travel with the VPC 40, but the portal stands higher and reaches further across: Y is 1,400 mm (55.1 in) as standard and can be ordered as 1,600 mm, 1,800 mm or 2,200 mm.

That changes what fits. Where the VPC 40 with its 500 mm of Z is a plate machine, this one can take boxes, housings and fixtures stacked on the table, while the 230 mm minimum between table and spindle nose still lets it work on thin plates. Each table is rated at 2,000 kg, and the table width goes up to 2,200 mm with the widest Y stroke.

X is 2,360 mm as standard with 2,940 mm and 3,400 mm as optional features. AXA quotes workspaces of up to 3400 mm in X and 2200 mm in Y for the VPC series, and the VPC 45 is the SK 40 model that reaches both limits.

The spindle is drive no. 110 with 6,000 rpm, 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC, or one of three options. For a machine this size the no. 113 drive with 255 Nm and 40 kW is the natural choice for steel, while no. 100 with up to 15,000 rpm suits aluminium plate. Guideways combine sliding and roller elements, and all linear axes use ball screws. The tool changer is stationary at the rear with 22 pockets, optionally up to 90.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large is the working area of the VPC 45?

X is 2,360 mm as standard, optionally 2,940 mm or 3,400 mm. Y is 1,400 mm, optionally 1,600 mm, 1,800 mm or 2,200 mm. Z is 800 mm. Table width depends on the Y stroke and ranges from 1,100 mm to 2,200 mm; table length is approximately the X travel.

02 What spindle drives does AXA offer on the VPC 45?

Drive no. 110 is standard: 6,000 rpm (up to 12,000 rpm optional), 143 Nm, 30 kW. Options are no. 100 with 95 Nm and up to 15,000 rpm, no. 111 with 191 Nm and 40 kW, and no. 113 with 255 Nm, 40 kW and up to 10,000 rpm. Ratings are at 40% DC.

03 How does the tool changer work on this gantry?

It is stationary and sits protected in the rear part of the machine. AXA says this layout allows long tool chains without any negative effect on machine dynamics and precision. The magazine holds 22 tools, optionally up to 90, and a tool change takes approx. 6 s.

04 Is there a 5-axis version of the VPC 45?

Two related machines exist. The VPC 45 U adds a B-axis tilting head and an NC rotary table and has 900 mm of Z. The VPC 45 DASK carries a 2-axis fork head with an 18,000 rpm spindle for simultaneous 5-axis finishing.
